I have been coming across blogs here and there about the stress of having their children home for the summer months. And I can’t help but wonder why. Summer is such a wonderful time of the year. There is so much to do. Homeschooling changes your view on things.1. It makes you thankful that you get a lot of quality time with your kids2. It teaches you patience… or I should say, your children teach you patience.3. It makes realize exactly how weird your kids really are, and it’s ok to laugh at them....more
We have all witnessed cartoons where characters become angry -- like this picture, they turn bright red in the face, steam starts pouring out of their heads, their eyes become devilish and everyone around them thinks they are out of control and crazy (that is everyone except for the crazy angry character). Sometimes they begin throwing a huge fit comparable to a toddler laying on the ground screaming and kicking. Then it happens. Inevitably the character either explodes, turns into a raging mad lunatic or falls over dead from not being able to control the anger any longer....more
I often wonder how we, as women, survive. I know that I am not unusual, but I spend the majority of my time worrying about what I have to do, longing to do the things I want to do, and guilting myself out when I don’t get things done, because I was doing what I wanted to do for myself....more
I'm a perfectionist. I thrive when given a new task and enjoy creating things my way (the right way...of course!). Okay, maybe not thrive. More like heart-thumping anxiety and end-less planning to get the job done above what was expected.

Working parents have a lot to juggle, and this can create stress. But what we often overlook is that stress has real health consequences. Several weeks ago, I put together a survey* asking working parents about stress and its effects on their health. More than 600 people responded. I filtered out respondents who lived in a household with at least one stay-at-home adult, which left 560 respondents in households where all adults work. Their answers were alarming:...more
Regardless of their personal belief systems (spiritual focus, formalized religion, or a combination thereof), people tend to like the comfort of feeling connected to those beings that support us from the other side, whether we believe "the other side" to be an alternate universe, a heavenly realm, etc....more
Yesterday I took my first yoga class. I was a bit nervous but excited. B took yoga in college and loves it but has not done it in awhile. We found a free class at noon and joined in. The class was packed but we both found mats in the back. No shoes, silence your phones, get the gear that will be used and sit quietly on the mat till class starts. I wasn't sure at all if I could do it, but I could and did. My knees were not too pleased but I was able to do downward dog, the plank and a balance stand (stork like) thing. I was a sweaty mess by the...more
My husband and I took our son for his first official haircut when he was 15 months old. The trauma of the event was not significant, but the energy exchange during the event was decidedly intense. My son went from sitting on my lap and enjoying the process while my husband entertained him to the opposite end of the spectrum, screaming and struggling to be let down....more
I’ve heard some interesting truths about happiness lately. Particularly, happiness in relation to parenting.
Parenthood magazine recently reported that 53% of moms are satisfied with the state of their mental and emotional health.
Only 53% are simply “satisfied.”
I had heard of the statistic before that says people with children are NOT more likely to be happy than people without children. But, I had not yet heard about this:
On an Oprah show about happiness, it was shared tha...more
