There Is No Solace Anywhere, For Anyone Who Dreads To Go Home. . . .

The title of this post is a quote from an autobiographical novel. Which one, and who said it? (Bonus points if you know!) This post is from an article for teachers and librarians that I wrote many, many years ago. I found it in a box of old papers I was cleaning out, as we are moving in a few weeks and I am throwing out anything and everything I haven't used in the last five minutes.  I’d forgotten about it, and this bothers me, because we should never forget about such things....more

Show and Tell

To read more form BUTTERFLY go to www.butterfly.pro To teach our children the ABC’s, we sing the alphabet song (again and again and again), we read alphabet books, do alphabet puzzles and play alphabet games. We help our children choose what to bring into school for show and tell each week to represent the letters of the alphabet. How awful one of us here at BUTTERFLY felt when she forgot about show and tell. The letter that week was T. Her son showed his tongue. Imagine if the letter of the week had been P. ...more

Excerpt from Chapter Six

As you know if you’ve been following my blog –I haven’t been blogging lately since I took up my new book project. Consequently, this week I decided to share a chapter from my published book, Darkness Overturned. From Chapter Six:...more

What's your class?

One of my favorite movies is Sophia Coppolla's Marie Antoinette. It's so beautifully made, with all the decadent clothing and desserts, I watch it several times every October because it always reminds me of my birthday. It also provides a simple reminder of what happens when the rich have it all (and why teenagers shouldn't have power), and the poor have nothing. What is welfare other than scraps thrown to keep the poor subdued? I don't like putting it in those terms, but it's the hard truth. Many people think others are poor because they didn't work hard, but really?...more

Pupil's Responses to Exam / Test Questions: a.k.a Why Teachers Drink

Man alive. There I was, minding my own business, trying to extricate the Barbie Doll that I had accidentally superglued to my left boot, when I heard the 'ping' of an email arrive in my inbox. I limped to my laptop with Barbie's head bouncing off the floor with each step. The email was from my friend Sarah who is a teacher. And she had attached a load of images that showed some actual responses to questions given by pupils whilst sitting their exams / tests.  They were so funny, that it would be totally rude if I didn't share them with you. ...more

21 Days of Compliments – Day 11

Today is Day 11 of the 21 Days of Compliments challenge. I was actually drying my hair this morning when my blog idea came to me. You know the saying, “just go to the bathroom and all sorts of ideas come to mind.” By the way, just what does that statement mean? Does the bathroom somehow act as a flushing mechanism for the brain?...more

Too Much to Ask?

Returning from a rally on our state capital on President’s Day, I wrote on my Facebook page: Americans join the worldwide struggle to push back again rich, corrupt government officials in the pockets of multinational corporations. We demand the right to free speech, the right to assemble and the right to fair compensation for our work. We stand for the right of every American to achieve the American Dream. We stand for our heritage and America's destiny. We are not afraid any more....more

My Life Changed When ...

Listening to my young daughter advise her even younger brother on some school matter the other day, it occurred to me that wisdom does indeed come with age. Young herself, at 15, it occurred to me that she already had a wealth of knowledge from her own good and bad experiences upon which to draw. The advice she gave was sound and, in many ways, better than the advice I could have given him since her words were based in cold hard facts having come from the trenches more recently than me. Who knew?...more
