Is your liquor vegan?

I believe wine is one of life's great pleasures. Perhaps not the healthiest beverage, but definitely one of the most delightful. Unfortunately, a variety of alcoholic beverages are often laced with animal ingredients.Towards the end of the brewing/winemaking process, "fining agents" are often used to remove impurities, usually in the form of isinglass (fish bladders), gelatine, egg whites. I've been aware of this for some time, but since fining agents aren't listed on the label, I'm sorry to say that I've generally adapted an "ignorance is bliss" attitude....more

Coffee in the morning; wine in the evening

Doggone Wine

My family would say I have a magnetic animal attraction to chaos.  I would argue that chaos randomly finds me just by nature alone. For some reason on this blistery cold morning in mid-February, I must have woken up with a chaos magnet under my skin by no fault of anyone; it was just what the stars had in store....more

Beef Stew with Red Wine, Root Vegetables and Leeks

Beef Stew with Red Wine, Root Vegetables and Leeks.  With winter here in the midwest, this is when I want stews, braises and soups.  This is a delicious take on beef burgundy.  The vegetables are caramelized in bacon drippings and sugar, and added to the stew near the end.  The sauce is amazing with fork tender beef and vegetables.  My favorite stew.http://thehungrybluebird.com/recipes/beef-stew-red-wine-root-vegetables-......more

Dear Wine, I've Cheated but I Love You Still

I was raised by my dad.  When he had his friends over, I never saw little cute drinks with umbrellas in them.  I rarely saw them mix anything with orange juice and never even had cranberry juice in my refrigerator until I became an adult.  When I think back, the only wine we had was Tawny Port. and trust me, it wasn't a good one.  What I saw were various versions of liquid that looked like tea and smelled like gasoline....more
