If you told me back when I started blogging in 2004 that blogs would become a hugely important part of my life I would have laughed at you. After all I only started a blog so that I could get a username that would make it easier to comment on other blogs. The next thing I knew writing on my blog was saving my sanity. The more I wrote the more I read other women's blogs.
Some of the women were like me at the time - in their twenties, not sure what they were supposed to do with this post-university life that they found themselves in. Others were not like me at all - successful business women and mothers. Some had radical ideas. Others had a way of writing that really did make me laugh out loud. Many of these blogs are firmly entrenched in my feed reader. I feel like I've kind of grown up reading them, and to an extend I have.
But each and every week I discover new-to-me bloggers - women with their own voices and their own fantastic stories to tell. I lurk on their blogs (I'm a horrible commenter), read their words and I'm thrilled to be able to share five of those bloggers with you today.
Jessica Watson inspires me. I started following her blog a couple of months ago, just after she left Australia and started her solo sailing trip around the world. She's sailing unassisted and non-stop and she's the youngest person to attempt it. Go Jessica! I love reading her blog and tracking her progress (she's almost halfway!) and if she doesn't post for a day I maybe get all Mama Bear and wonder "OMG! What happened? What's wrong?" and it's always nothing other than that she was busy. Jessica is what we want our young girls to be - independent, determined, smart, and brave.
Skip to my Lou let's me play pretend. In my other life, the one in my imagination, I Am Crafty. I am one of those people who can sew and cook and make generally awesome items on a regular basis. I can cook and knit and bake (erm, bake a bit) but I really would not describe myself as crafty. I own a sewing machine that I don't really know how to use. So instead of actually being crafty I live vicariously through Cindy's craftiness and send links to her projects off to people in my life who can actually make the items she highlights.
Capital Mom makes me smile. Brie is someone I started following after meeting her at a local blogger meet-up. As usual, I was the on the only one without children. We later bumped into each other at the local Farmer's Market and impressed ourselves by remember each other's real names instead of just our online names. Mothering is not easy and she doesn't pretend that it is, but even on the hard days you can feel the love she has for her children roll of the page, whether she's writing in prose or poetry.
The Great Fitness Experiment encourages me to get off my butt. I am a sloth. Well, not entirely but I am lazy. I like to read blogs about women who are active in the hopes that it will rub off on me. I know I should exercise more and I live near lots of wonderful walking paths. One of my favourite things about Charlotte's blog is the community she's fostered. There are always great conversations going on in the comments. And someday I really will get off my duff and exercise. Really. I will.
The Cooking Canuck helps feed me I had a bit of a hard time figuring out what food bloggers I've started following this year, especially since after BlogHer Food my feed reader exploded with food bloggy goodness. I follow a lot of food bloggers and it feels like I've been spying on their kitchens reading their blogs for years. Dara has the double whammy of awesomeness by being both a food blogger and a Canadian (even if she is currently living in the USA). Her photos and recipes regularly make me hungry, which as far as I am concerned is one of the main tasks of a food blogger. And there's comfort in reading about another east-coaster who has left the nest.
I'd love to know about the bloggers that inspired you,
