BlogHer Network Accepts Paid Advertising From A Presidential Campaign

Today the BlogHer Network accepted our first paid advertising from a 2008 presidential campaign. At the time of this post, BlogHer.com and about a dozen sites in our publishing network are running an advertisement purchased by Obama for America in support of Democratic presidential nominee and Senator Barack Obama.

I'd like to share two thoughts on this occasion:

First, congratulations everyone. Paid advertising by a presidential campaign is further validation of your influence as bloggers and as voters. Since January of 2007, we've seen an incredible amount of buzz on BlogHer.com and across the BlogHer Network about the 2008 presidential election -- especially the economy, Iraq, health care and the environment. While women certainly don't all vote alike, we are the majority of voters. Thanks for helping us show that women really do blog deeply on everything under the sun, from politics to parenting, from foreign policy to food, from technology to shoes, and everything in between. Bravo.

Second, BlogHer is a non-partisan organization precisely because our members are omnipartisan. As such, we are happy to air ads from political parties, campaigns and candidates that meet our advertising guidelines. More about advertising on BlogHer.

Comments are open. I'd love to know what you think of this decision and BlogHer's policies.

"Don't be content with being average. Average is as close to the bottom as it is to the top."

As a person with no party loyalties whatsoever (I want the best from all parties!) I love it that a presidential candidate has recognized the power of BlogHer and is putting his money on it.  And, even though I have no party loyalties, I tend to believe that the candidate who is smart enough to understand and bow down to the power of blogging women is probably the candidate for me.

My, my, I have used the word "power" twice in one comment.  Let's just make that three times.  Let the entire universe bow down to the POWER of blogging women!

As for the BlogHer ads:  put them ALL on my blog.  I'm honored to have them, and to be a part of BlogHer in every way.

I've opted out of having political ads because I don't reside in the US. I think it would look a bit funny, an Australian blog having US political ads. I must admit I was in two minds though because I'd much rather Obama get in than McCain.

Cause I would be totally chuffed to have an Obama ad on my blog, but who knows if it would reach anyone eligible to vote for him...

I can't even imagine how much hard work and how many o-dark-thirty hours you all have put in here at BlogHer.  You deserve great advertising from anywhere.

I think it's wonderful.  And since Sarah Palin, I'm now all about McCain/Palin.

.....but I'm also a huge Obama fan and happy to see him around here.  (I'm also a Michelle Obama fan too, so glad to see her around as well.)

Sometimes it does appear that BlogHer is very Liberal/Obama, but I've seen that our Obama friends also have voiced they feel it is quite the opposite - so maybe it's 'just right.'!!

Not opposed to the concept or y'all getting paid, just the constant replaying of the same cheesy thing over and over and over....;)

And one thing that's great about the BlogHerAds network is that they allow you to easily opt out of any campaigns you're not comfortable with. If Obama decides to expand the BlogHerAd campaign - I hope I get to run them! I'd love to show my support for him in that way.

Finally, a campaign that "gets" it.

I just want to know what I have to do to get the ad on my site?!   :0)

But I have to admit, I almost didn't. I mean, it's clearly paid advertising and not an endorsement, and their money spends just like Obama's.

In the end, though, I decided it's my personal blog, so I made the decision as a personal call about what goes on my space. After all, that's why I choose BlogHer Ads in the first place!

It makes me ridiculously proud.  You're right, they wouldn't spend money here if they didn't think this constituency valuable.  One more congratulations to the three "mothers" of BlogHer!

If there's an industry or a company or an ad that you as a blogger don't want, we will either prevent it from appearing on your blog or remove it when it does.

I can confirm we have not been approached by anyone selling those! That said -- I do hope this doesn't disappoint you -- we'd absolutely take a meeting. After all, women manage healthcare for the entire family, and it appears a number of us are living with men...

And you're right that we'd welcome advertising from Senator McCain's campaign as well. Appreciate your comment.

I love what this means for Blogher and women bloggers. I am also ecstatic that Obama is the one buying ad space. I had already set my preferences to block any from McCain.

There's a prominent McCain surrogate blogging here today, as luck would have it. Perhaps the GOP will pony up for its own ad soon.

As for my opinion of the ad policy, I congratulate you on having a business model that is able to attract the support needed to sustain this increasingly vital source of information and public discourse.

I'm a member of the BlogHer Ad Network, and we can opt not to have certain subjects appear on our respective blogs. So, for example, I don't want PETA ads appearing on my blog. Others may choose to not include any political on their blogs.

When the announcement went out that BlogHer would have ads from a political campaign available, they didn't say which campaign, so it could have been for McCain for all I knew at the time. That it's for Obama really doesn't make a difference to me with regards to the idea that BlogHer's audience is being recognized.

As for people feeling hurt or misrepresented, well, I'm sure that's bound to happen. Perhaps it will cause other campaigns to reach out to this audience.

I'm glad that Blogher and blogging is validated. I'm very happy that it was pointed out that Blogher is not supporting one canidate over the other. Unfortunatly I have come to this post because I was led to believe that Blogher was supporting Obama. I think that is going to be the confusion and frankly, misrepresentation. Blogers are going to turn the tables to say that Blogher is supporting Obama, "see they have an ad". I just wonder how someone who uses Blogher ads on their site might feel if they are for Sarah Palin.

Glad this post explains things and maybe it will clear any confusion up.

but this ad is what I need to push me over into Obama territory.

And it doesn't bother me that it's there. Free country and all that, where advertising is generally not.

But I'm so biased. As long as its not an ad for any erectile dysfunction medication, which I'm barraged with everywhere (except for BlogHer! I should never have started watching football...) so it seems, I'm kind of okay with it these days.

(Not really kidding, just sort of.)

Keep on keeping on, Lisa.

I'm not thrilled that it's Obama's campaign, but as long as the process of securing advertising is fair, there's not much I can complain about besides the candidate.  ;-)

I think it's great. You're right, it's validation that this site and (maybe) more importantly, that womens' views are a key element in elections. We certainly cover politics here so I think its prudent for Obama to spend his ad dollars where it counts (I saw Michelle's post yesterday so who knows if its Mr or Mrs O who's to thank).

Hey Senator McCain! Quid pro quo!

As someone who has BlogHer ads on my site, I want to mention that we were told we had the option to opt out of any political ads, so someone in favor of McCain/Palin could have opted out of Obama ads if they chose to do so.
