That's right. My laptop, camera, miscellaneous gadgets, three days of clothing, an extra pair of shoes, a skirt, even my day pack for schlepping once I'm on the ground are all in ONE bag. All of it. In. One. Bag. How? I'm going to tell you how.

First, I checked the weather forecast for Chicago. It's summer. Summer clothes are lightweight and folded properly, they take up very little space. Then I packed my sundries - toothbrush, meds, that kind of stuff. I don't wear makeup, you couldn't make me buy into the makeup industrial complex even if you promised Clooney himself as a result. (Or, if I was wired that way, Hallie Barry.)

Then I had a little chat with myself. While I have every desire to be a media darling, I'm a blogger, for crying out loud, which means that more often than not I sit here in my jammies or yesterday's clothes. I am Emma Thompson in Stranger than Fiction (loved it), I am Paul Giamatti in Sideways (hated it). I'm not going to a Hollywood casting call, I'm not looking for dates, I'm not Elvis. I do not need nine changes of clothes. I want to be clear - if you need those things, that's a-okay, you go right ahead. You'll look fabulous, I'm sure. But you are NOT getting away with One Bag. The bottom line? Be mostly presentable, always comfortable, and travel with One Bag. Evening gown, be gone. All this talk of what to wear? Wasted on me. Right over my head. I think of only one thing: Am I going to have to carry that?

Finally, I pondered the war on liquids.Shampoo? Moisturizer? Conditioner? I decide to put my faith in the hotel for a few of these items. For the little extras I need, refillable bottles will do. Three ounce refillable bottles and that damn Zip-Loc bag. That allows me to bring the moisturizer I like and that leave in conditioner. Voila. It all fits in the regulation sized wheelie. Perfect.

To make it easy in the airport, I'll repack my bag. The Ziploc goes in the outside pocket, the laptop right on top. I'm already picturing myself headed for the train in a That Girl kind of moment, not dragged down by too much luggage, everything I need right there with me, managing the lot of it solo with complete ease. If that doesn't turn glamorous eyes my way, I don't want to know them.

Travel light, travel easy. See you in Chicago.

I not only packed it, I just finished using it about 15 minutes ago!

Yes, the flat iron is a necessary item in humid weather. But I am proud to say, I did get it all in one bag, plus the laptop. :)

I need a smaller bag that I can lug around the meetings (going to be blogging some of the sessions). So, my backpack for my clothes & camera. Messenger bag for the laptop. Both are small and manageable. While it's not quite one bag (which I could totally do with my carryon suitcase), it's still portable.

What are these hot rollers and ceramic hair straightening iron of which you speak?? Pam, I'm with you. On our recent 9-day road trip, I took only one bag, but once I was out on the road I realized I could have left 75% of what I'd packed at home.

P.S. Emma Thompson in "Stranger than Fiction"...(hee).

P.P.S. Needless to say, YOURS will be the first BlogHer posts I read. ;)

I can't be the only one who packs the ceramic hair straightening iron.. after using it til the last possible minute before jamming it, still 400 degrees, into your suitcase, trying to put it next to something that isn't meltable...

I need to read, "why you don't need to fill up the car just because you can" which you no doubt have written previously and I've missed, or will soon write so I can take advantage of your wisdom before I get on the road in a couple weeks for a serious cross-country road trip.

it's hard to explain, but hot rollers are to me what a tiara is to one of our contributing editors. they are something that comes out when I am getting together for a celebration with my favorite women friends. big hair worn with equal parts ornamentation and irony.

that being said, I decided what Pam would do, is Pam would bring her velcro rollers!

I get points for progress, right? a little foil star?

My giant suitcase and I are here already.

Does it serve as mitigation that I will have been away from home for nine days and that I don't own a medium sized suitcase?

Really, though, the what if factor just took over.

I could have used an intervention but now it's too late.

But it's mostly because nothing was clean. I've been busy. :)

That being said, I'm driving to Chicago so I'm not terribly worried about how many bags I'm taking. That also being said, I'll get it all in one plus my laptop bag.

The only worry I have right now is whether or not the White Sox/Tigers game will be rained out tomorrow.

It is 8:40. The laundry is done. The carry-on is out. I am looking at my hot roller set, wistfully. Schemingly. Backsliding-ly.

Pam, I think I may need some sort of residential program. Boot camp for everything-but-the-kitchen vanity-sinkers.

Because damned if I'm leaving my skin care products at home or risk having them taken away.

But I am coming with just a tiny wheelie and my laptop bag.

And maybe a separate purse.

But that's it! Hard decisions will be made!

Bringing the computer was the deciding factor. If I bring the computer, I ain't checking the bag. Therefore, every little thing, including the under 3 oz vial of moisturizer has to go in one bag!

I'm bringing a nice yoga jacket with long sleeves and a zipper up to the neck for those same over air conditioned rooms. Otherwise: Flipflops and capris, baby. I went to BlogHerBiz with suits. I know better now. :)

Can't wait to see everyone!

Bringing the uke means I have more than one bag. Not bringing the uke means I don't have a uke. Dammit.

And while I am NOT Elvis, I CAN play Blue Hawaii. Though it is not in my standard repertoire.

As for the light sweater, I'm a girl that doesn't leave home without a pashmina. Good for the plane and those over air conditioned rooms.

Pam, darling, we are going to get on FAMOUSLY. I'll be the dowdy looking redhead in khaki army pants and/or brown shorts, probably with a ponytail and $1 rusted hoop earrings - my only mandatory accessory.

Thanks for the packing pep talk!

One bag (7x14x19) to leave in the hotel room, with t-shirts, jeans, skirt undies, and a 2nd pair of shoes. Plus a gym bag for my sock-knitting, computer, camera and snacks that I'll carry around the conference. Still trying to get all that in the other bag to travel truly light. (after all, we will be getting a bag at registration...)

My only "what if".. is a light sweater for some over-air-conditioned rooms.

Remember, ladies, that it's just one weekend, and that your back and shoulders will be ever-so-thankful if you keep the bags to a minimum.

Pam, as I am in the middle of washing everything I own, this was just the stern "talking to" I needed this morning!

If you see me in more than one change of clothes per day, you may walk up and slap me. Please.

I always keep my destination in mind with that kind of thinking. What if I need "x" in Chicago has a really different answer than the same question asked about, oh, Ho Chi Min City.

Just this morning I was talking to myself and thinking that I should really try to get everything in a carry-on plus my backpack for my computer.
Does that still count? Now, I won't know if I accomplish this feat until tonight when I start packing instead of my mental packing that I have been doing for a couple of days.

Very impressive. I do try (although I must have some makeup.) Unfortunately I'm still in the "what if I need it" mode in spite of all the times I've traveled and haven't used half of the things I brought. And I realize, no one notices if I wear the same black pants more than once!
