Great News! Email notification for comments has arrived (or come back if you remember the brief moment in time when we offered this feature on the "old" BlogHer.) Many of you have asked us to return this service and, now that we've worked the bugs out, we are very happy to offer it.
Here's how it works: You can now subscribe to blog posts you make on BlogHer and comments will be emailed to you. You can also have comments emailed to you from blog posts you didn't write but have commented on. Are you confused? Don't worry, it sounds more confusing than it is.
The first thing you need to do is decide whether you want to "auto subscribe" to the blog posts that you write on BlogHer or whether you want to subscribe to just some of your blog posts. If you want to subscribe on a case by case basis then you simply click the checkbox next to "subscribe" in the subscription menu that's been added to the "Blog Entry" module. (It's right underneath the "input format" menu.)
If you prefer to auto-subscribe to all of your blog entries, you can control that in your account settings tab.
1) Log into BlogHer.com and click "my profile" in the top right corner of the site.
2) Then, click "edit my profile" in the top right corner of the tag profile page.
3) Click "account settings" and scroll down to the "subscriptions" menu.
4) Check the checkbox next to "auto subscribe". If you want just a link to the comment, scroll down and save your changes. If you'd like a teaser to appear in the email, click the checkbox for the teaser and scroll down to save your changes.
Here's something important to know about auto-subscribing. If you choose this option you will receive all comments to all blog posts that you write on BlogHer plus all comments made on any blog posts you commented on. If you're really, really active on BlogHer, this could mean a lot of email.
You can manage your subscriptions by moving from your "account settings" page (or any other page in your account area) by clicking the word "subscriptions" in the top right corner of your personal account area. I know, the text is greyed out so you feel like it isn't clickable - it is. When you get there, you'll either see that you have no current subscriptions or a list of items you're subscribed to. You unsubscribe be un-checking the box next to the thread(s) you're no longer interested in receiving comments for. Save your changes.
I'm betting the most often asked question about this new tool will be "Is there an email digest format that I can subscribe to?" Unfortunately, not at this time. You also cannot set up a schedule for comments to be sent at regular intervals.
