A Recipe for Vegan Pesto Cashew Ricotta Pizza

Pesto Cashew Ricotta Pizza

[Editor's Note: Pizza is one of the things I consider to be really tough to make vegan—I'm pretty much wedded to the idea of creamy cheese on my slices. But this recipe, which uses cashew cheese to achieve ultimate creaminess, and that features lots of other bold flavors, looks beyond satisfying and delicious. I can definitely see serving it to vegan or non-vegan friends! --Genie]  Read more

Jamie Oliver Talks About Food Revolution Day and Why You Should Participate!

Food Revolution Day is May 19

On Saturday, May 19, people all over the world will celebrate the first Food Revolution Day, a day of action designed to help everyone think about where their food comes from, consider making healthier, less-processed choices about what they put in their bodies, and gather together to share those ideas and meals as a community of cooks and eaters committed to eating well. Celebrity chef and food activist Jamie Oliver, who has been working in the United Kingdom and in the United States since 2004 to improve school meals for kids throughout both countries, is using the day to expand awareness about ways to eat well, and why it's so important to do so. I had the opportunity to ask Jamie about his work and about Food Revolution Day—read on to learn more about the bigger picture into which this important day fits, as well as small ways that everyone can take part.  Read more >

Gluten-Free Isn't For Me

Bug and Stephanie

I used to think I was "lucky" that I had a child who, nearly three years in, hasn't exhibited any food allergies. I really felt for fellow new mothers who were painstakingly and scientifically cutting food groups out of their own diets as they struggled to figure out what in their breast milk was adversely affecting their babies. I quaked over the stories of Urgent Care visits and EpiPen deployment that were required to deal with surprise vomit attacks, hives, swelling and breathing issues. And while other mothers sought out allergen-free crackers and cookies, snacks and meals, I bought whatever I wanted. With all the stresses that motherhood brings, going blind reading the cramped and excruciatingly tiny-fonted list of ingredients in order to make sure I don't send my child into anaphylactic shock wasn't one of them. And I felt lucky.  Read more >

How to Oven-Roast Hamburgers

Oven Roasted Hamburger

For most of the time I've lived in California, I've lived in apartments with no balcony or outdoor patio space. That means I'm unable to do one of my favorite warm- (and, on occasion, cold-) weather activities: Grilling. I particularly love hamburgers just off the grill, and frying them up in a pan on my stove never works the same way for me. And, though I know there are millions of people out there who love their electric countertop grills, my limited experiences with those have left me totally unhappy with the burger results. But roast burgers in the oven? That never occurred to me before I saw this post from Adam Roberts at Amateur Gourmet. This method looks pretty genius to me, and in honor of National Hamburger Week (which is this week!), I'm going to have to give this a try.  Read more

The Perfect Asparagus and Potato Frittata

Asparagus & Potato Frittata

For the longest time, I'd assumed that I'd mastered the art of making the perfect frittata—until that memorable day when my mother-in-law offered to teach me her secret "trick." (There was no way I was going to have a frittata-off with her! At Easter, in her part of the country they make mammoth-sized frittatas, sometimes with up to 40 eggs!) Having said that (to my credit), I think my frittatas were pretty good, but now thanks to her I've finally figured out what that one little technique was that I was missing!  Read more >

Fresh Strawberry Sorbet

Strawberry Sorbet Cookies

[Editor's Note: Fresh strawberries are available now at my local farmers market, which mean I'm, of course, buying more than I can possibly eat in one sitting. This recipe is a simple, natural way to use them, and then you can serve the sorbet in a bowl, in a cone, or, to delight the kid in you or the kids in your household, sandwiched between two cookies! --Genie]  Read more
