How to Make Perfect Lemon Curd

Lemon Curd

[Editor's Note: Lemon curd is one of those tangy, wonderful treats that I love to eat, but have never tried to make. It's a great ingredient to use in other baked goods, but is also lovely drizzled on toast, or, well, just eaten with a spoon, if you're decadently-inclined. This recipe makes homemade lemon curd sound just easy enough that I am now dying to try it myself! --Genie]  Read more

Celebrate National Pick Strawberries Day with a Strawberry Rhubarb Fizz

Strawberry Rhubarb Fizz

[Editor's Note: It's National Pick Strawberries Day today, and those lovely berries are at the peak of the season. If you find yourself with an abundance of them, try making this beverage, which can be served as a non-alcoholic spring treat, or, with the addition of gin, tequila or vodka, kicked up a notch and served as an adult option. Either way, you'll make the most of all those strawberries you picked...or just picked up at your local farmers market. --Genie]  Read more

Jamie Oliver Talks About Food Revolution Day and Why You Should Participate!

Food Revolution Day is May 19

On Saturday, May 19, people all over the world will celebrate the first Food Revolution Day, a day of action designed to help everyone think about where their food comes from, consider making healthier, less-processed choices about what they put in their bodies, and gather together to share those ideas and meals as a community of cooks and eaters committed to eating well. Celebrity chef and food activist Jamie Oliver, who has been working in the United Kingdom and in the United States since 2004 to improve school meals for kids throughout both countries, is using the day to expand awareness about ways to eat well, and why it's so important to do so. I had the opportunity to ask Jamie about his work and about Food Revolution Day—read on to learn more about the bigger picture into which this important day fits, as well as small ways that everyone can take part.  Read more >

How to Can Jam at Home

Canning Berry Jams

Try as I might, I've never been able to make enough jam in one season to outlast the year—and my kids' appetites. Prepping several batches of all our favorite types—Strawberry, Blueberry, Wild Black Raspberry and Cherry—each year has become a family tradition, almost as much as eating a dollop of home canned jam on everything from vanilla ice cream to Sunday morning waffles—and I'm honestly not sure which is more beloved.  Read more >

Winning The Food Stamp Challenge And Eating Well

Food Stamp Challenge Dinner

This week, Mario Batali made news as he announced how hungry he has been while taking the Food Stamp Challenge, an effort to make it through the week while spending no more than $31 total for all 21 meals and any snacks. Batali and his family are discovering how hard it is to fit meat into one's diet at the low price-per-meal covered by food stamps, and they're reportedly eating lots of rice and beans and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But Rachel Bolden-Kramer of Hip Dhamma is also taking the challenge alongside Batali and his family, I love her approach, which focuses on whole and healthy foods, as well as on guaranteed money-savers like looking beyond the grocery store.  Read more

How to Pressure-Can Tuna At Home

Canning Tuna

Canned and fresh tuna is something a lot of us take for granted, but the fact is, this big game fish may not be found in our oceans much longer. Overfishing has threatened the world's tuna population and now scientists are scrambling to figure out how best to save the stock that's left. It's a precious fish, one that should be eaten thoughtfully and, if you happen upon more than you can eat, preserved for later.  Read more

Imagine picking up a box of groceries at work. A Guide to Home Canning Tools & Equipment

Canning Equipment

The beautiful thing about home canning is it doesn't require the mass purchase of kitchen doo-dads that you'll only use twice a year. If you have a small kitchen, it doesn't have to be overrun with one-function-wonder gadgets, or if you're like me and are blessed with ample kitchen storage but suffer from a severe aversion to clutter, your OCD won't be set off by a whole closet full of stuff you only use twice a year. n fact, most of the equipment you'll use for preserving food at home are the same tools you use to prepare food at home everyday anyway.  Read more >
