Why I love our Wednesdays

Wednesdays are the best days of the week for me - Wednesdays are our family days. On Wednesday mornings, I try to do something special with my son before I take him to school: Give him a new maze to do; complete a worksheet; read a short book together. It's my way of spending those few extra moments with him that he wants and needs....more

Gamers over 50

Hi I'm a gamer and I'm over 50. I don't know if anyone will read this, but hope so. I'll tell you how I got started gaming. I was suffering from depression I was dianosed with by-polar. My son I have one but I have another one that's like a son. They told mom why don't you play some games on your wii. I was just using it to watch netflex. So they bought me my first game, it was Zelda. I started playing and got hooked. It got me out of the depression, now mind you I do take medication. But it can only do so much....more

Feeding My Inner Teen - Style Savvy Trendsetters

So there’s this video game that my friend bought me for Christmas a couple years ago.  It’s called Style Savvy Trendsetters and it’s always on my game rotation.  Truthfully it barely leaves my 3DS slot....more

I Need To Build My House! Video Games

I Need To Build My House! - Video GamesThis generation is so dead. You ask a kid, 'What are you doing this Saturday?' and they'll be playing video games or watching cable, instead of building model cars or airplanes or doing something creative. Kids today never say, 'Man, I'm really into remote-controlled steamboats.'  ~Jack White...more

Curling

God bless curling. You see my Jim watches CNBC.It is his only channel of choice. So now, the Olympics are on, and guess what-no stock market! It’s a pleasure to see him enjoy the women’s curling especially. His mind is under so many things right now that hopefully this will provide a little respite for him.Me? I go in and watch it, and come back out to the kitchen.I have always been a ski jump person, and of course, ice skating and dancing. This is pretty good timing, as we are so shot that anything to get our mind off of things is awesome. ...more

Meddlers

In between the realities of my life, the day-to-day concerns about whether or not I’d have my job the next day. In between the endless pursuit of political clarity in my graduate program. In between the hurried and harried funeral, and subsequent introduction to my father’s side of the family. In between the stoic and cold separation from my spouse. In between my transition from one beloved group of friends to another in my Second Life…It seems I had actually caught someone’s attention....more

Virtual Paradise

I’m in my head again. Trying to avoid remembering again. It’s one thing to go back and remember your childhood, family life from 30 odd years ago; it’s something else entirely to look back at yourself after only a few years. To look back at pain so fresh the wounds are still weeping. I’d rather remember the good stuff, in both worlds....more

Glossary

In order to continue this story, let's review a few glossary terms that I made up to describe my final two years in Second Life.  Note that most of these ocurred 'outside' the game itself. Catfish

My first year in Second Life was amazing. The first person I became friends with, Reya, took me under her wing and taught me how to use the design tools. We explored different sims together, told each other our secrets, and even rented land together next to her good friend Vollmar. Now Vollmar had created this fricking amazing sim next door, a huge warehouse filled with staging equipment. Yes, I said that correctly. Virtual staging equipment that is used for larger events inside the game....more
