Women in Tech: Technically Women

Welcome Technically Women into the world of women in tech. Technically Women is a fairly new site, organized by an international group of business women who intend to examine the way technology is changing the world of business.

Are Computers and Technology Still a Man's Domain?

So are there really more men experts in the computing field or does it just seem that way? That question is part of an ongoing and raging debate about women in technology. From women missing as top speakers at technology conferences to little girls shunning computers for something less boring is male dominance in the field a reality or an illusion?

Blogging While Brown 2009: An Interview with Gina McCauley of What About Our Daughters

Have you heard of Gina McCauley?  If you haven't, listen up--this is a woman who's on the cutting edge of the internet and social media and you need to get to know her right now.  If you do know who she is, read the following interview anyway, because I defy you not to be inspired by her story, her passion and her good old fashioned smarts.  Just the kind of black woman the MSM almost never talks about.

Blogging While Brown 2009: Making Money, Making Friends and Making Movies

Blogger Angel Laws started her blog Concrete Loop with five dollars in her pocket. That was just about four years ago.  Now Angel says she gets 700,000 unique visitors a day and makes about $250,000 a year through ads on her blog.  Her advice for bloggers during last weekend's Blogging While Brown conference in Chicago:

A Woman's Business: Isabel Kallman

BlogHer was started to find where the women in technology and blogging were. Now that thousands of them have been found I'm on a quest to find and talk to my favorite women in the blogosphere. Women who make my jaw drop with their enthusiasm for for communicating within a new and often changing space, women who are always ready for more. I'm not that type of woman; the kind that works on project after project and it terrifies me to even think of leaving Real Job for a life of being an entrepreneur but the women I will be interviewing in this series have done just that. They've gone after what they wanted and took control of their careers and for that reason I am often in awe of what they've done with their lives and how they've gotten here.

Reports from The 140 Characters Conference

We all know that if it's 140 characters it must be Twitter. Jeff Pulver organized The 140 Character Conference, held June 16-17 in New York City. There are future conferences in the works, to be held in Los Angeles and London. Pulver's description of the conference:

Blogging While Brown 2009: A Conference for People of Color with Lessons for All Bloggers

"Fish where your buyers swim," said Milton Haynes of Blacks Gone Geek. Before you hit publish, check your headline, "That's the most strategic choice you're about to make," said Megan Tady of Save The Internet.com.  "Own your digital real estate," said Hajj E. Flemings, branding expert and author of "The Brand YU Life." These quotes came from presenters at last weekend's 2nd annual Blogging While Brown conference held at the University Center in Chicago.  It's the kind of advice that's important for all bloggers but the attendees of BWB got that and much more.

Online Resources for Self-Publishing a Book

Not long ago in a discussion here about the Kindle, Shelley from Burningbird commented that she was planning on self-publishing her next book. She also wrote about it in My DRM Free Self. Her comment set me to thinking about self-publishing. Most bloggers who publish regularly may have enough material already written on their blogs to put it together in book format. There are numerous ways to accomplish the publishing itself.

It’s a Good Time for My Cool Glove: Literal Video

Remember when videos were “arty,” and were basically people standing around singing? Yes, I’m talking about the ‘80s, instead of now when videos are like tiny action movies with five costume changes and special effects. The most special the effects got back in the day was Michael Jackson’s Thriller contacts. Well, friends, someone has come along to breathe new life into those old videos and you may have seen them: Literal Videos. But do you know the clever artist behind the genius dubs?

BlogHer ’09 Speakers in the News: Lenore Skenazy

Lenore Skenazy is serious about allowing her children to grow, learn and experience the world from her “free-range” approach to parenting – and it’s one of the reasons we’re so excited she’s speaking at BlogHer ’09 about online safety for kids.
