Is There Anything Funny about Death? 24 Writers Say Absolutely!

Funeral flowers

During the eighteen months before my mother's death, I remained at her side. We had a complicated relationship—true of so many mothers and daughters—and she didn't appreciate my daily reminders regarding her medications, her need to walk, the importance of eating. Mom was a visual artist, ardent reader, and political junkie; she didn't go in for idle chatter. As for sharing thoughts or feelings about her illness? Forget it.    Read more >

Here's my pictoral coverage of the 2009 interview between the Octopony Mom and Dr. Phooh, in which they discuss things like income and housing for fourteen children.  Read more >

Midlife and Tattoos: Why I Ink

Butterfly

No, I am not barreling at the speed of light toward a midlife crisis, I'd like to squash that idea right now.Yes, I realize that at 40-something many people are removing their tattoos not getting them. No, I am not desperately clinging to my youth by pretending to be edgy and cool - I'm ALREADY edgy and cool, just ask my kids and then ignore their snorts and eye-rolling. Pet Shopping Extremes and Furbaby Money Tips

Cat Scratch DJ

I love my cat. And I loved the cat before her, and the cat before HER, and the seventeen cats before her. (I grew up near a farm. They came in packs of three back then.) And I admit, I've been known to spend enough money on my cats to make my mother's mouth fall open. (My cat Sybil needed daily thyroid pills for years.) The DST Plan: Leaving The Comfort Zone

Comfort Zone

Thanks to Daylight Saving Time, I woke up at what I thought was a 'normal' time this morning. My girls and I were up at around 7:45-8ish and I thought, 'Yeah! This time, DST change did not win!'  WRONG!  From the moment I got up, I should've been prepared to take off running, because my entire day was on fast-forward from there....So, this week I'm focusing on getting out of my 'comfort zone'.  I am SUCH a creature of habit, I like things 'just so', and I'm totally all about doing the same things over and over again because 'it works'.    Read more >
