In Defense of the 'Unladylike' Christian Woman

Lady

A few months ago I wrote a couple of blogs about men, women, sex, marriage, masturbation, infidelity and Christianity. They were widely read, my blog stats were happy to report. I received some great feedback, too. And a half-joking guarantee I’d never be invited to speak in church in any of the southernmost states of the U.S.A. And that’s quite okay. And then, there was this - emailed directly to me, not left as a comment on the blog:Dear Jo,  Read more >

40 Things Learned in 40 Years

Birthday

A Birthday Eve post: I'm sorry for all the cliches, but they are all true! Here are 40 things I have learned in my 40 full years: 1. I do believe in love at first sight...it happened to me.2. My kids bring me so much stress and joy at the same time.7. It's okay to say no.8. I think I've lived many lives.9. The grass isn't always greener.  Read more >

Midlife and Tattoos: Why I Ink

Butterfly

No, I am not barreling at the speed of light toward a midlife crisis, I'd like to squash that idea right now.Yes, I realize that at 40-something many people are removing their tattoos not getting them. No, I am not desperately clinging to my youth by pretending to be edgy and cool - I'm ALREADY edgy and cool, just ask my kids and then ignore their snorts and eye-rolling. Yes, I may possibly be out of my mind, but the crazy is what keeps y'all coming back for more so I'm  unleashing a whirling dervish of it here in today's post. You're welcome.  Read more >

You Can't Pass Down Your Tweets

Twitter

My great-grandfather came to this country from Italy in the early 1900's.  His supposed intention was to send for his wife and children after he got settled but his family never heard from him again. So his daughter, my grandmother, came to America when she was 16 years old to look for him.  According to my mother, my grandmother said she never found out what happened and wouldn't talk about him anymore.I often think how sad it was that my mother and her siblings never got to know their grandfather or really anything about him.  Read more >

Treating Menopause With Venom

Snake Fangs by Daniel Heuclin/Evolve/Photoshot via ZUMA Press.

I'm taking snake venom for hot flashes - Lachesis mutus, to be exact. This homeopathic remedy comes from the poisonous venom of the Bushmaster, a greatly feared snake native to Central and South America.  Read more >

When "They" Say Something, They're Not Talking About You

Chris Guillebeau

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of speaking at the World Domination Summit, the conference masterminded by the impressive Chris Guillebeau. Chris is the author of the blog The Art of Nonconformity, and the purpose of this summit was to answer the question "How do we live a remarkable life in a conventional world?"  Read more >

The Reality of Menopause

Menopause by me and the sysop via Flickr

There is so much that nobody told me, how my life would change when I became full-blown menopausal: besides everything becoming life-changing, for some (like me), the never-ending up and down experiences have been, to some degree, rather traumatizing. And because there isn’t a manual, per say, I thought I’d brave to share just a little of my daily life, since becoming menopausal, more than two years ago now, and much of which has become embarrassing moments.  Read more >

My 50th Birthday: No Cake, Just Kindness

Suebob and Goldie

Anyone who reads or has met Suebob knows the woman is a selfless ball of fun and here's proof. In turning 50, she realized the great bounty that is her life and opted to return the favor by eschewing cake and presents and instead asking others to give back. Truly inspirational.  Read more

Paying It Backwards

Helping hands

We often hear the phrase pay it forward. You do something good for someone, usually a stranger, as part of a chain of positive action. You pay forward because you often can’t pay back the particular person who did you a good deed. I recently have had an experience which allowed me to pay it backwards. I was able to return a favor to a friend who was very good to me when I was in college. She took me in when I had nowhere to go. She gave me food when I was hungry.  Read more >

The Promises We Make Our Bodies

Jeans

We have been through so much together, you and me. In my much younger days, you were perkier and less lumpy. A fitting end to my giraffe-like legs that were also free of lumps and bumps, veins and baggy parts. In college, you were made for 501's and not much else. I could eat and eat, once cramming in 11 pizza burgers in the college cafeteria, and you wouldn't change a bit.  Read more >
