End of an Era

The only K-Mart in this area is closing down on December 7.I suppose I shouldn’t care very much about this.  After all, neither my wife nor I am much for shopping.  We get ‘er done and get out as quickly as possible.  Yet there is something vaguely disconcerting about a local institution passing into history....more

When Is It Time to Decorate for Christmas?

It seems to be the question of the week, so I will jump in. When do you start decorating for Christmas? If I had it my way, I'd start today, but my hubby loves Thanksgiving too much. So... I have to stick to my traditional day after Thanksgiving.(although that won't stop me from listening to Christmas music)...more

When the Crap Hits the Fan

As I left my apartment building this morning, I could tell that something was different.  There was a low murmur filling the usually quiet neighborhood.  My apartment sits just off a road that leads up to the périphérique around Toulouse and I recognized that quite a bit of stop-and-go traffic along this street was producing the unsettling, agitated noise.  Once or twice, as I got closer to the road, although it was still out of sight, someone sounded a loud, comical sounding horn.  "That doesn't sound like a normal car horn at all," I thought to myself....more

She rebelled against everything from the Vietnam War to fighting for women's rights to freedom of sexuality. She thumbed her nose at the behavioral expectations of her strict, Catholic family and I grew up eves dropping on my parents' as they frequently discussed her latest exploits with disapproving tones....more

Legalizing homelessness?

Last night, with 97 percent of the vote counted, CNN projected that the state of Florida would not approve the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes (Merica, CNN). Because the issue meant a change to my home state's constitution, a full 60 percent of Florida voters needed to approve the measure; last night, only 57 percent had. Twenty-three other states, however, have made medical marijuana legal....more

Jeptoo’s failed drug test, is this a trend?

On Monday, Athletics Kenya admitted that the illegal substance Rita Jeptoo tested positive for was EPO. The positive sample was taken on September 25th and considered out of competition but I’m still bothered by it. I find it hard to believe that if she was using EPO it didn’t affect her race....more
