Back in the old days, babies—even ones conceived through in vitro fertilization—had two genetic parents: one mother, one father. Now, Britain is on its way to allowing embryos conceived through IVF to have genetic materials from three different people.
An Australian mother to nine children took an active role during the c-section birth of her 10th and 11th children. After doctors cut open Gerri Wolfe, 41, she reached down to her lower abdomen and pulled out her twin daughters, Matilda and Violet.
The so-called "maternal assisted cesarean section" was all a part of the plan, but only after Wolfe convinced doctors at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, New South Wales, to step back and let her do the actual delivery.

This past weekend was a “clean-up” weekend for my two girls. We had recently reorganized the room in the basement for their own personal play room. They spent the day putting toys away, deciding on a new color for the walls, adding some decorations and stealing lamps to brighten up the room. Of course the lamp they want did not have any light bulbs…so they began to scour the house for a bulb....more
I am doing a series of clay sculptures of critically endangered species, and I have now done three; The Chinese Tiger, The Chinese Giant Salamander, Baby Leatherback Turtles. I have also finished the clay work on the Eastern Lowland Gorilla. They are all headed for extinction without serious intervention. Also, don't forget my book, Enfolded in Silence/A Story in Art of Healing from Sexual Trauma in childhood....more
One day far into the future, when my son accepts his Nobel Prize in chemistry, I fully expect him to thank his Mom for doing all those "way cool" egg experiments with him on that one rainy Saturday afternoon. "Because of her," he will say, "I learned to look at the world as a place filled with answers. You just have to know the right questions to ask." And I will tear up, and it will be lovely. (Trust me.)...more
In his speech to the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the US Oval Office’s annual function honoring its press corps, Seth Meyers essentially remarked how skepticism has gotten so out of hand that when it came to President Barack Obama’s birthplace, some may have to have been there to witness him being born before believing that it took place in America....more
One of the most hated aspects of the internet is the alphanumeric password, and it may be facing its own demise. There is a revolution that has taken place and it involves a shift from passwords to biometrics. Many have already become familiar with fingerprint scanners that are currently outfitted onto high-end smartphones....more
THE SMALLEST OBJECTS CAN HAVE THE BIGGEST INFLUENCEA SINGLE PERSON IS A SMALL UNIT COMPARED TO THE ENORMITY OF THE 3 BILLION-DENSE POPULATION. SO, ISN’T IT TRUE THAT ONE PERSON CANNOT HAVE MUCH OF AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD? THIS IS SOMETHING I HAVE THOUGHT FOR YEARS, BUT IT ACTUALLY COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH....more
Once a baby is born, all parents/friends/relatives start playing the same game: Who does the baby look more like? Mothers will point out that the baby has her chin or her eyes. Fathers will point out the baby has his hair color or his lips. Serious players will pull out old baby photos and do side-by-side comparisons....more
TO ALL OF MY FELLOW NERDS AND GEEKS, I WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY PI DAY!Today is Pi day, but it’s not just any ol’ Pi Day. Oh, no. Today is March 14, 2015, which translates to 3-14-15, which translates to the first five digits of the number pi. It’s a confluence that we will not see again for another hundred years. So, for most of us, we will never see it happen again....more
