A Crisis of Faith: Gender-Neutral Parenting in a Gender-Obsessed World

Driving down a rural road, tears welling in my eyes, my voice scaling octaves and my hands banging the steering wheel as the breakdown I never saw coming comes barreling toward me like a freight train.I was on my way to Kohl's.  To buy running shoes.Track shoes, to be exact, for my son.  The same son we drove hundreds of miles to Kansas for the national USATF meet last year.  Shoes that same son wasn't sure he wanted.  Read more >

Summer Break Is Coming: Get Outside -- on Bikes -- with Your Kids!

family biking

Spring is here and time to head back outdoors again. One of the best ways my family enjoys the outdoors is on bikes. For Earth Day three years ago, I posted about getting out your bikes and checking on Rail Trails on TrailLink, sponsored by the Rails-To-Trails Conservancy. Back then, my daughter was five years old and usually rode (slept) in a bike trailer. Now we’ve ventured into mountain biking as family. We don’t live in an area that is safe to bike in the streets, so my 8-year-old daughter has only ridden her bike in our driveway. When I suggested that we hit the rail trail this year, she was a bit anxious about the narrowness of the trail and the number of people zipping by.  Read more >

It's Baseball Season and Cheeseburger is Back!

We've survived our first week of baseball season.  There's been tears, frustration, excitement and about every other emotion in between.  We've braved 40 mph winds, rain and winter-like temps.  And I've become a Martha Stewart in the laundry room, perfecting the art of removing grass stains from white pants.  All have been memories in the making!  Read more >

This Is Soccer, Not a Culinary Class

Dear Mouthy Housewives, My daughter is 10 years old and just started the spring soccer season. Today I received an email from the coach with the snack schedule. Evidently the girls will be getting a half-time snack as well as an end of game snack and drink. Is this ridiculously excessive? Can't a bunch of 10-year old's bring a water bottle and play for an hour without sugary drinks and 2 courses of snacks?  Read more >

Dance Moms, Soccer Moms, Basketball Moms - Same Diff

Dance Moms

(Editor's Note: As a sports parent, or stage mom, is it possible to assess your child's abilities objectively? What happens when there is validation that your kid is not the "best" at something. Jo Francis, who writes a blog about her son's quest for a Division 1 basketball scholarship, takes a look at reality competition shows and finds that some are a bit too real. ~js)    Read more

I Am Soccer Mom - Hear Me Roar

Soccer Mom by Global x via Flickr

Sunday marked the beginning of Spiro's indoor soccer season. I absolutely love going to his soccer games. This past Sunday was no different than any other game I have been to. I yelled the entire game and I got the inevitable eye rolls and looks that I have grown accustomed too.  Read more >

To Be Or Not To Be - Great, That Is!

Coach giving advice by taylorpad212 via Flickr

In the light of the very recent passing of Joe Paterno, I was watching ESPN's Sportcenter for more details. As the coverage continued, there were more and more statements about Paterno's greatness as a coach, mentor, husband, father, philanthropist, and more. This raised a question:What does it mean to be a great coach?  Read more >

Athletic Scholarships: Awarded to Students, Earned by Parents

Team Mom by niseag03 via Flickr

I remember sitting in a college classroom and listening to my fellow students debate the good and the bad of athletic scholarships. On one side were the athletes and on the other were…well…everyone else.  Read more >

The End of an Era: When Your Child Abandons Her Sport

(Editor's Note: Been there. Done that. It wasn't gymnastics for me. It was soccer. And for years all of my free time was devoted to chauffering, coaching and cheering two daughters who were inevitably playing games on opposite ends of town. Good times that I miss immensely but as Girls Play Sports guest blogger Laura Amann writes, "This is the fine line that we must walk as parents: when to encourage them [our children] to keep going over a bump in the road, and when to guide them to another path." ~js)  Read more
