BlogHer Voice of the week

Kindra Hall has a simple message in her post The Winner's Crease. You make your luck. Or, make lemonade out of lemons. Or maybe, every cloud has a silver lining.

But Kindra's path to that message, via two finely-drawn memories from her youth, is so subtle and so bittersweet that we couldn't resist naming her this week's BlogHer Voice of the Week.

Her post starts with an admission:

I am a cheater...

I grew up playing board games [...] and every chance I got I cheated.

I peeked when I wasn't supposed to. I gave myself extra money when I was the banker (and I was always the banker). I moved pieces when no one was looking. I even managed to rig the spinner so that it always pointed the direction I wanted. No matter how the deck was shuffled, I always came out on top.

Kindra expended quite a bit of effort to enable her cheating...she was a sneaky strategist.

Until as a lovesick 16-year-old her cheating cost her the one thing she was certain was meant to be hers: "His name was David."

Her scheming to prove to David that they are soulmates (and you really have to read the story to believe it) goes horribly awry, and she makes a vow. To never be a cheater again. Kindra realizes she can expend all that effort making the best of life as it is, instead of trying to game the system of the Game of Life:

I am a recovering cheater. I have left my tactics and schemes behind me. As it turned out, David wasn't my true love and (now that I've posted this story and my family will read it) I won't be able to play LIFE again. On the up-side, over the years I have learned to enjoy winning when it happens, but more importantly to enjoy the twists and turns of fate as the game is played. True not only in board games and compatibility tests, but for most things. In the end, my non-cheater mantra has been - It is not the cards I draw that determine whether I win or lose, it is what I do with them.

For the pure joy of sharing her clear vision of her younger self, Kindra Hall  is our BlogHer Voice of the Week.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to send in your nominated posts. Remember to nominate individual posts, not entire blogs, and keep them coming! If you want to check out all these posts, check out the BlogHer Voice of the Week archive.
