BlogHers Act: FAQ

1. What is BlogHers Act?

BlogHers Act is our community's initiative to improve the world by harnessing the power of women online. In 2007-2008, we're blogging to save women's lives by improving maternal health.

BlogHers Act was launched in June, 2007 and co-announced by us BlogHer Co-founders, and Contributing Editors Cooper Munroe and Emily McKhann from The Motherhood who are veterans of online difference making with their blog, Been There, which was started to harness the power of the online community to provide aid and relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Emily and Cooper blog about maternal health on the site every week, and we invite you to join in by blogging this topic or others you're advocating for on your blog. Any member of BlogHer can blog here on BlogHer.com. Here's how.

2. How did you choose maternal health as the focus of BlogHers Act?
After the community voted, BlogHers Act was first narrowed to Global Health. Given the vast size and scope of the world's global health problems, we decided to vote again to narrow the topic to a single issue we could blog all year. Maternal health won as our focus for 2007-2008.

3. What if I am interested in something other than maternal health?
Terrific! You have great company: BlogHer has an entire section devoted to topics such as Darfur, clean water, education and countless others. Here's how to find it: Check out the "BLOGHERS ACT - ALL ISSUES" section on the BlogHers Act special event landing page. You'll find BlogHers who are passionate about using their online voice to make a difference on issues such as the crisis in Darfur, global warming and supporting the education of girls in Cambodia. If you could We want to know about it and tell the community too.

4. Are there other BlogHers Act initiatives?
Yes! Notably the online women of Canada have developed BlogHers Act: Canada and the focus issue they chose was the Environment. You can learn more at Mommy Blogs Toronto. And we encourage you to start your own action initiative for the topic of your choosing. Blog it here and at your own blog and tag it "BlogHers Act."

5. What happened to "the four issues that women online want the U.S. Presidential candidates to address in order to win our votes in the 2008 Election?"
These four issues -- Environment, Economy, Iraq and Health care -- grew into the BlogHer Voter Manifesto. Join our discussion of Election 2008 here.
