Two explosions during rush hour in Moscow have killed at least 38 people with the death numbers rising, the first such bombing in almost six years. The explosions were caused by two female suicide bombers who struck 45 minutes apart. Over 100 are said to be injured from the blasts.

According to the Washington Post, "Officials said evidence at the scenes, including body parts, indicated both bombers were women wearing belts packed with explosives as well as bolts and iron rods that acted as deadly shrapnel." Though no group has come forward with a statement of responsibility for the explosion, it is believed that the women were Chechen "black widow" bombers, or female suicide bombers originally organized by Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev.

The Christian Science Monitor states, "The use of women to strike civilian targets was pioneered a decade ago by Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, who was seeking a way to smuggle explosives past Russian checkpoints at the outset of the Kremlin's second war to subdue separatist Chechnya, say security experts."
