Book Passages: A Roundup

I couldn't attend Book Passage this year, a conference devoted to travel writing. I was torn -- after SxSW in March, BlogHer and TBEX in July, and the upcoming Blog World Expo, there was no way I could afford to do it all, speaker passes and sponsorships not withstanding. At nearly 600 dollars (before travel and accommodation expenses) it's not cheap, and after this year's conference bender, it wasn't in the budget. Since I couldn't go,  I'm (re) living this year's conference vicariously through other bloggers, talking to those who attended, and saving my pennies for next year.

There's a post by contributor Lauren Q on the Matador Community site -- Top 5 Things I Learned at the Book Passage Travel Writers and Photographs Conference:

I had no idea what to expect from the faculty and attendees of the conference. I've never been to anything like this, and part of me was worried there'd be a lot of posturing and ego. It was anything but. Throughout the four days, I was continually struck by the humility and graciousness of the faculty. They were truly there because they love travel, love writing and photography, and want to share the skill and experience they've acquired with those of us still aspiring.

On the Travel Writer's Exchange, there are a post by Trisha Miller

I’ve always said that the Travel Writing community is one of the most supportive of any I’ve encountered, and it’s so true here, as everyone I’ve met has been open and giving of their time and generous with their experience. The opportunity to connect with other travel writers, travel book authors, travel photographers, travel editors, literary agents, and publishers is priceless.

On Travel Writer's News, there are some notes from writer Tim Cahill's talk:

I enjoyed hearing Tim Cahill speak last night at the 18th annual Book Passage Travel Writers and Photographers Conference, where he let us in on the secret to travel writing. We all know the secret, right? Tim said. “Something goes wrong.” That’s what makes the story interesting.

Book Passage made the list on Brave New Traveler -- 7 Conferences to Watch Great Travelers in Action:

The Conference offers an array of workshops, panels, and evening activities. There are many hours of informal interaction between faculty and students during lunch and in discussions that often last late into the evening. Alumni have published books, articles, and photos — many as the direct result of lessons learned and contacts made at the conference.

If you made it to Book Passages and blogged about it, I'd love to see your posts, even if they weren't from this year's conference.
