book review: the fault in our stars

i’ve seen the previews for john green’s book to movie hit the fault in our stars over the past few months and was intrigued enough to give it a try after my divergent coma. i wasn’t disappointed. this is an easy read about a tough topic: cancer. specifically, child cancer. hazel grace lancaster is a 16 year old girl living with a fatal form of cancer – a thyroid cancer that renders her breathing extremely difficult, and requires her to use a portable oxygen tank at all times.
hazel is encouraged to make friends and at her mother’s request, starts to attend a peer counseling group that focuses around teens/young adults with cancer. some are survivors, some are like hazel and waiting for their card to be pulled. hazel is not really a fan of the share-fest but starts an unlikely friendship with a newer attendee, augustus waters who after having his leg amputated due to his diagnosis of osteosarcoma … begins to attend sessions to support his friend isaac who is another kid in the support group – soon to loose his eyesight due to his cancer diagnosis.
hazel and augustus begin a love story, of course. and bond over hazel’s adoration of a novel called an imperial affliction, where she feels the heroine anna, resembles hazel’s exact emotions and feelings “being” her cancer diagnosis. the rest of the book follows hazel and augustus’ time together and without completely ruining it for you – will make you fall in love with love.
the book was well-written. i can’t remember if i’ve ever read a john green book before (shameful) but this tale had an easy plot, great character development, and just enough emotion and angst thrown in to leave the reader completely enthralled with the characters. i can’t wait to see the movie – i noticed in a lot of the snippets, that lines are taken directly out of the book which isn’t always the case when screenwriters are adapting a novel. it will be interesting though, since shailene woodley (tris in divergent) and ansel elgort (tris’ brother caleb in divergent) are now set to play lovers in this movie.
