A BOOK-WORTHY HIDDEN iPHONE CHARGER
By erinyeschin on September 08, 2012
One of the most cluttered table tops in almost every home across the Globe is the bedroom nightstand. Covered with everything from remote controls to socks, lamps and candles to lotion and bras and some (like ours) even have not one but two books that have yet to be read but have been placed there to remind us that we want to. But almost ALL of them have the obnoxious snake-like charger chord, regardless of our phone’s maker. So what’s a way to restore order in all of that cluttered chaos? A hidden book charger of course! Ready to see how we’ve done it? Then Let’s Do The DIY Thang, shall we? First you’ll need the following: A good book (and by good we mean a good at least 2 inches thick), a drill, small drill bit, X-acto Knife and/or Retractable Blade, a pencil, and your iPhone charger.
First, center your charger just above the spine of the book and mark the width with the pencil. Then make sure that your bit is no wider than the base of the charger and shallow in length. Drill holes into the pencil marks, remembering that you will drill into the pages a bit. (Which is totally fine)
Next take your X-acto Knife and/or Retractable Blade and cut the section between the two drill holes on your book cover. Check to make sure that it is large enough to fit the charger through but small enough to be flush against the edges. Then take the charger, center it within the page, and mark the page as your guide for cutting its new home in the book. Cut the pages at least an inch deep into the book and slide the charger into place.
As is, it will look amazing but you’ll have a bit of trouble releasing your phone from the charger as it pulls the chord through. If you wish to NOT make this a permanent project, anchor the charger chord by stapling it down into the pages of the book. (Make sure the staples surround the charger chord, not pierce through it.) If you want a more permanent anchor, use a low-temp glue gun to bind the charger chord to the pages and the book sealed shut. Either way you choose to do it, it’s guaranteed to be as good as gold! Now that your hidden book charger is complete, stack it with other books of various sizes and kiss that snake-like chord HASTA LA VISTA, BABY!

With vintage books comes an incredible ecru shade to the pages that no spankin’ brand new book could match. We’ve decided to use our sliced scraps in a different project so stay tuned to DIY2EMC to see what this sweet literary bird’s nest becomes next!
