Are You A Dreamer?

It is unsurprising, given the title, that Kim Edwards' novel, The Lake of Dreams, does indeed feature many dreams. It contains both the dreams we make consciously and those that find us in our sleep.

"You know, the Iroquois take dreams very seriously. They see them as the secret wishes of the soul - the heart's desire, so to speak. Not all dreams, maybe, but the important ones. And when they recur, I tend to think they're important." p. 254

Lucy has a lot of dreams after returning home. They are often fitful and disturbing as her brain tries to sort through everything that she's finding out, as well as figuring out what she wants from the future. It left me asking if I'm really a dreamer.

Everyone dreams, of course, but I don't have vivid Stephenie Meyer kind of storytelling dreams that stay with me after I wake (though that would be nice). They may linger for a few moments before darting away at the start of the day, not to be remembered. I don't, to my knowledge, have recurring dreams. The closest I've had were the recurring nightmares of a cartoon cowboy in a ten-gallon hat and his ever advancing stampede of cartoon animals whenever I had a fever as a child.

I'm a day dreamer. I have an active imagination, something that saved me during many a boring day in the classroom as a student. But that does not seem to translate into active dreams when I'm asleep. At least not that I remember.

I realize it seems a tad cliche, bloggers talking about their dreams, but are you a dreamer?

I used to be more of a dreamer than I now. I ended up bogged down with depression, a bad marriage, a large debt and lots of worry. But, I feel like I'm coming out of all of that. And dreams are important. I find myself slowly dreaming again...but maybe more realistically this time?

I actually have crazy vivid dreams all the time! It's weird, I guess I should start writing them down. My husband and I have always told each other about the dreams we have the night before, so maybe I am more inclined to remember them because of that.

A dreamer? Yes, but in a very practical way. I have dreams like having my home neat and tidy as a regular occurrence. I dream of creating nourishing meals that my entire family adores. I dream dreams of things that are beyond my current realities, but are within reach as I work to translate my practical dreaming in to applied reality!

I don't have memorable dreams that often, but when I do they are usually pretty jarring. I find that most of the dreams I can remember are somehow about the stresses and fears going on in my life at that time. It makes me think that dreams are very telling of our conscious and subconscious thoughts.

I am. A dreamer. and I wouldn't want it any other way. I know that it's thanks to my propensity to dream that I have the family that I have today, the lifestyle I have, the completed manuscript on my flashdrive. Dreaming is ideas, ideas can turn into actions, actions become your life.

The most vivid dreams I've ever had were while I was pregnant. Other than that, I have a hard time remembering my dreams. Well, the ones while I'm sleeping, anyway. ;)

Judaye 8 pts

My night dreams are recurrent and/or continuing serials that I look forward to and like to wonder about.

I'm going to talk for a second about the worst nightmare I have, and it involves my teeth falling out. Has anyone else ever had this stress dream? It's horribly vivid, and I always wake up checking my teeth.

I often have very vidId dreams but the only stay with me for fleeting moments after I wake. I wish more of the would stay with me while conscious since many of them make me pause and laugh or shudder upon waking. I think some of my dreams might make very interesting stories!

I, too, have recurring dreams, and often they seem to evolve from the last one. Really weird...I know! And most of the times I can remember them, whereas my husband says he rarely is able to recall what he dreamed about.

By the way, I don't believe that talking about dreams is cliche. I love to talk about them. It makes for a fun discussion. :)

I have always had extremely vivid dreams. When I was younger, one of the dreams I recounted to my mom turned out to be a memory from when I was a baby. Another time, I had a dream that turned out to be a version of events that were soon to happen. Most of the time, though, I just have such vivid dreams, it's hard to tell the difference between them and reality. And though I used to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what these meant, I soon came to realize that a lot of my dreams were more about what things had happened to me during the day, who I had interacted with, etc.

And thanks to Facebook, far too many of my dreams are now featuring people from grade school and high school - yikes! :-)

Someone asked me once if I dream in color or black and white. I dream in moments that bleed together that otherwise don't belong together. I can never remember whether or not there was color. And within a few minutes of waking up, my memory is gone. I like the idea of a dream journal. Because the only dream I can remember from my whole life is one I had repeatedly as a child where I could fly for short periods of time and to test it out I jumped off the roof of my house and glided down to the ground. Safely.

Absolutely. The answer is definitively "yes."

When I was younger, I remember having vivid dreams that I could remember. In the past few years, I find I have a difficult time remembering my dreams (lack of sleep and staying up with babies is not conducive to remembering dreams!). When it comes to daydreams, however, I've always done that!

kateri27 9 pts

I have always been a dreamer, now making my dreams turn into a reality, that doesn't happen as often as I need it too.

snarkymomma 8 pts

Oh, Gosh, I've always been a dreamer. My imagination has been running wild about what COULD be since I was a young child. Sometimes that dreaming gets in the way of practicality because I sometimes fight what I want with what I can actually have, but I feel like if I don't think big I'm not going to meet my full potential here on Earth.

Make it Beautiful 9 pts

I like to think that our dreams really do tell "the secret wishes of the soul" and I try to interpret mine when I can actually remember them. The only problem is sometimes those secret wishes aren't exactly what we think they "should" be and the interpretations can be a little TOO telling!

A Crafty Escape 8 pts

I am much like you in that although I often dream, I tend to forget them 10 minutes after waking up. I had a friend in high school who kept a dream journal. I always meant to do that but never got around to it. I'm sure it would be fascinating to read back about dreams that I had 15 years ago.

I definitely am more of a day-dreamer than having vivid, prophesying dreams at night. I do remember one dream in particular that was an absolute answer to my prayers and left a strong impression on me. But that was only one time. I more so think about what I hope and dream of some day and like to make lists of goals that I hope to accomplish to help me achieve my dreams.

LibrarianLizy 6 pts

I am both a day dreamer and a sleep dreamer. I had a doozie of a dream last night that featured some random guy from work and some weird, bizarre situations. I woke up mentally and physically exhausted. So much for a good night's sleep!

I day dream a lot. I have a very vivid imagination, so I am always coming up with little scenarios and writing scenes for my book (that I will never actually write). I'm sure it has something to do with being an only child and always playing alone. I can get lost very easily in my daydreams, which is both good and bad.

SweeterLemon 10 pts

I always consider myself a practical romantic. I daydream, but I always end up making the dreams very rational and practical. Boring. Luckily my sleeping self lets me have vivid, impractical, crazy dreams, so that makes up for my wakeful practicality!

Rita Arens 72 pts

I'm a vivid night dreamer and daydreamer. I don't remember my night dreams every night, but when I do, I always think I should write them down because they could be good stories (well, dystopian stories anyway). But I don't, because they're never anything I actually want to write about!

I daydream a lot about accomplishing my goals (getting my novel published, stuff like that). I find it helps me stay motivated. I totally believe in the power of visualization.

Indigo 9 pts

I don't think I am a day dreamer. I'm more focused on getting the most amount done in the shortest amount of time. I'm also the one that has to say no to all the other day dreamers in my family because I am the one who balances the checkbook .....

I think I am a hopeless romantic so in ways a dreamer. I also still daydream as an adult but do not put any into action. Maybe that should be a new years resolution.

Baby Feet 7 pts

Nope, not vivid dreams over here at all. I used to before my kids were born, but since then I think my sleep must be interrupted too much. Lucy's dreams were magical and deep, that's for sure!

thenheathersaid 6 pts

Lately I've been having my least favorite kind of dreams. The ones where people from various seasons of my life, which should NOT be interacting with one another, are, of course, interacting one another. I always wake up frustrated and confused. My Chicago elementary school classmates should not be having brunch with the people I used to work with in Texas and the barista at my favorite coffee shop in New York. Just- -- NO.

creativefamilymoments 6 pts

I seem to go through phases. I have been that type of dreamer that is haunted by the images/stories/events of her dreams in a way that seems to push me to work out what's beyond the surface in my life, but then other times in my life nothing... just an imagination that has entertained me and helped me in different venues.

DigitalChickTV 5 pts

I'm a day dreamer as well, not big night dreamer, unless I'm stressed or something strange is playing on the TV while I'm sleeping!

thegnomesmom 6 pts

I'm not really a dreamer, sadly. I wish I did have those fun dreams that you remember once you wake up more often! I did have a recurring dream as a child though.

a new song 5 pts

I am a very active nighttime and day dreamer! My husband is always amazed at the level of detail I can remember in my vivid dreams. My recurring nightmares are always the kind where I have a math final for a class where I have not gone all semester or done any homework. I have found those come when I feel unprepared for some event or life change, so in many ways my dreams are the subconscious working itself out.

emilymckevitt 5 pts

Nope, not a lasting impression night time kind of dreamer. But I've spent plenty of time playing catch-up after being caught in a daydream (whether in class when I was younger or at the occasional work meeting now...).

My dad built the house where I and my four siblings spent the first 15 years of our lives. Every one of us, now adults, has dreams that take place in that house. My husband thinks it's creepy!
