Do You Have a Library Card?

One of the things I loved most about Eleanor Brown's The Weird Sisters were all of the lovely passages about books and libraries. Almost every time books were mentioned I found myself wanting to stick a Post-It on that page to mark its spot. Brown and the Andreas sisters understood book lovers.

Our parents has trained us to become readers, and the town's library had been the one place, other than church, that we visited every week. When we were young, we had three little red wagons that we would pull into town like a parade each Saturday morning, our mother at the head like the high-stepping grand marshal. Rose liked to go last, to keep an eye on the rest of us, particularly Cordy, who was usually in desperate need of it. p. 50

I think my first library card was for my elementary school's library. I can still picture the library with the picture books along one side and the chapter books along another. The small green leather couches that formed a semi-circle. The non-fiction books were across from the librarian's desk, mostly used for school projects rather than recreational reading. I know we visited it often but it never seemed like it was enough.

I didn't visit my town's library often, though I did get a card for there as well. It was small and since we didn't live in town it was a bit out of the way. I used to spend every other weekend with my father and he'd take me to the "big" library with its children's section that was larger than my town's entire library. I loved that place. It was big and sunny and everything that a children's section of a library should be. I remember "graduating" to the young adult section that was shelved near the adult section downstairs. It felt horribly grown up, but I kind of missed the sunny children's section.

I've moved around a bit since high school and sometimes I've lived in places with very good libraries (and library systems) and sometimes I haven't. It's made me appreciate libraries so, so much more than I even did as a kid. I'd be lost without my library card. Completely and totally lost.

[My comment seems to have vanished!]

I cannot imagine life without a library card. Our librarian made an exception for me so I could check out many more than the 3 books children were limited to when I was a kid. I would have been so lonely and bored without my library card.

Sandy D 5 pts

yes, I do, but sadly I don't use it as much since I purchased a nook last year.

tmcharris 7 pts

Yes, of course! One of my favorite "field trips" with my kids is to the library and they love it!

JennaHatfield 162 pts

I do! And in fact, this moving process caused me some grief, because if we got the original house we wanted, we would have had to have changed libraries and library systems. The one we currently have (and will keep with the new house) has an incredible library system for requesting books and a better series of classes for kids. The one we would have ended up with was crap. CRAP!

thechattymommy 5 pts

We each have a library card and I don't even want to say how many of us owe money on ours!

But seriously, love reading and it really inspired me to keep getting the kids into reading more after reading this book.

The 3 sisters, although a little strange, really thrived from the books they read.

infinebalance 6 pts

Absolutely! Despite the fact that we have shelves and shelves of books in our home nothing is quite like going to the library. It's unlimited, no boundaries, a sense of all your dreams can come true, no commitment.

the.me.i.be 43 pts

Yeah. Live there practically especially since I stopped working.

Love to borrow Bollywood & other Foreign Language DVDs from my library. I can't see these movies locally, wouldn't want to own them (even if I knew where to buy them), I'm not a member of Netflix & Red Box doesn't carry specialty movies. I also like to borrow Pimsleur CDs to practice Spanish in my car (stuff works!).

If I didn't have my library, I'd be lost!  (i borrow lots of books from there too)

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

the.me.i.be One of my former libraries had a fabulous Bollywood collection. I didn't borrow nearly enough of those when I had the change.

corley 5 pts

I don't have a library card, but I need one! I'm researching for a book I'm writing now, and I know I could a) get more work done and b) really use the historical resources at our memorial library here in Asheville.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

corley Yes you do need a library card! And librarians are great at helping people research, especially local collections. They often know things that you wouldn't think to ask!

bourriquet76 7 pts

Library cards were one of the first things we did when we moved to this base.  We were still in temporary housing, our base house wouldn't be ready for 3 weeks, but we trekked to the library with my husband's orders in hand and each of the kids walked out with a huge bag of books.  My son and I just were there a couple of days ago, ostensibly to look for books for his school project, but we left with several read-for-pleasure books as well.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

bourriquet76 I love that you went to the library before you got settled. :) I bet your kids did too.

jamesandjax 6 pts

I sure do. And I love it when it's too close to pay day for me to justify buying another book or e-book! Last month, I discovered that my library lends e-books. I'm beyond excited to give that a try after I finish the 2 books I'm reading now.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

jamesandjax Love library e-books. :) They are great for when you are going away on a trip. So much lighter than actual books.

felicepd 7 pts

Do I ever! Yes, I have a card and I use it often. I love the library and I'm encouraging my kids to love it, too!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

felicepd Yay for encouraging kids to love the library!

z0mbiekitty 6 pts

I do have a library card. Sadly, our local library is very small, and it is hard to find much of interest there. I end up buying most of the books I want to read.

the.me.i.be 43 pts

z0mbiekitty   I'm curious.... do you donate those books you have to buy because the library doesn't have a copy to the library?

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

z0mbiekitty That's hard, for both you and the library. Often circulation figures play a part in budgets (even if it is just justifying a protest against a decrease in funds). But with small libraries and small budgets they don't always attract users. It's a hard cycle.

My earliest library memories are vague because I was only about 3 years old, but they've been filled in for my by my mom. We lived in a little town, very close to the library, and we'd walk there often. My mom is an avid book lover/reader as well. I wore the little prairie-style dresses my mom made for me, with big pockets I'd fill with tiny rocks -- which is how I earned the nickname of "Pebbles" from the librarians.

And yes, I absolutely have a library card now, as do both of my daughters!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

See Jamie Blog Pebbles! OMG that is too cute for words. lol

NAMAmmaSTE 6 pts

I've always had an attachment to the library, too. My childhood memory is actually very similar. We lived in a small town which had a *tiny* satellite branch housed in a trailer which was only open once or twice a week and the closest "real" branch was too far to frequent. It was always a magical experience for me, though. A place full of wonder.

Yes, I do have and I've always had a library card and the magic of the library is still there for me. AND, now that I'm a parent, I try to make the library a regular part of our lives so my son can grow up with that same love of books & the library.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

NAMAmmaSTE Ah yes. The tiny satellites. I remember them well. I think one big advantage today, at least for those that are part of larger systems, is how much easier it's become to request books from other branches due to online requests. I really feel like I have access to a whole system now, not just one branch.

lindseyallyn 5 pts

I don't have a library card now, although it is something I have been meaning to do. I loved going to the library as a little girl. In elementary school, we got to go on a library field trip every two weeks. It was always one of my favorite days. I absolutely loved the cards in the front of the book that showed who had read the book before you. It was so interesting to me to see who had the book before me and for how long.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

lindseyallyn I kind of miss those cards. Every now and then I'll check out a book that still has the old card in it.

readnblog.com 5 pts

I have a library card and the public library is just within meters away :)

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

readnblog.com I lived across the street from a library once. It was not a great living situation (not the world's worst roommates but let's just say they weren't the best) but having the library so close was really pretty awesome.

hawthornescarlet 5 pts

I have the same library card that I have had since I was a kid. I gave it to the librarian the other day and she was impressed by my long term patronage. I am going to start volunteering at my local library in the next couple of weeks, and it will always be a place close to my heart.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

hawthornescarlet I've thought about volunteering at the library. I just haven't quite worked up to investigating it fully yet.

Jeanetics 5 pts

I do have a library card, though I find that with my bad habits it is more of a "Monthly-fee paid membership" card to the public library!!! oops.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

Jeanetics I used to be the same way until we made the library part of our routine. Between having a regular time when we go, online accounts (and a library app!), and having one place in the house to store all the library books our fines are at a minimum these days. :)

RosieShores 5 pts

I do have one, but haven't used it in years. I mostly read online now, due to the weight of books and stoopy arthritis. I miss the library and the look, feel and smell of books!

One of the most frightening things I have ever seen was the "Twilight Zone" in which Burgess Meredith breaks his glasses just as he discovers he has "Time Enough At Last" talk about a nightmare! eek

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

RosieShores Have you tried an e-reader? Many of them are lightweight and while there is some tug and pull going on between library systems and publisher right now (that I suspect will all get worked out this year, one way or another), most libraries have pretty good e-book selections these days. I find e-readers a lot easier on the eyes. Some libraries even lend e-readers.

mdelacruz 5 pts

I absolutely have one and couldn't live without it. Three of my four kiddos have cards too and I soooooo related to that part of the book. Books were HUGE in my family. My mom limited the amount of TV we had based on how much we read. I thought at the time like I was a "nerd" and being punished, but now that I am a mom I do the same thing and I am so thankful she did that!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

mdelacruz My parents didn't limit my tv time, which means I became very skilled at reading a book AND watching the tv at the same time. Multi-tasking FTW! ;-)

I visit the library once a week... I always leave in a good mood. Yes, library cards rule!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

creativefamilymoments The library puts me in a good mood too. It's a nice part of our week.

JenR 5 pts

I do have a card, I could not live with out it!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

JenR Have you memorized your library card number? lol I have. That's how much I use it to log into the system.

Love Invents Us 5 pts

The bookishness of the family was one of my favorite things about the book. I LOVE the library and have had a blast sharing it my son. I wrote a post about it recently: http://loveinventsus.blogspot.com/2011/11/library-love.html

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

Love Invents Us What! What? They closed the library on football days????

sasvil9 8 pts

I most Def have a card. We have a pretty awesome Library here, its huge, with a great childrens section! Love going there. I'm able to reserve online and then pick it up when its ready, so nice!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

sasvil9 I LOVE reserving books online. It's like free shopping.

savvyjulie 7 pts

YES. I got one as soon as we moved-- I didn't even have mail yet to prove my residency, and had to bring my apartment lease with me. I was just that desperate for a library card!

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

savvyjulie I've done that! Thank goodness for libraries that accept a lease as proof of residence!

jlund151 5 pts

YES and I use it all the time. I am an avid reader and I also hate to dust so I borrow all my books from the library. Kind of like a free netflix - I request about four or five at a time. Sometimes I have to wait awhile for the hot new best sellers, but I find I am never at a loss for something to read! I also used it weekly when the kids were very young and I was a SAHM living on one income. We had basic cable which allowed for PBS and to supplement we borrowed a lot of kids movies. My kids went through Pokemon and Scooby Doo phases where I think we borrowed every movie in the network :-). My son who is 10 got his first library card last summer and uses it to read the Warrior Cat series and summer reading books.

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

jlund151 I hate to dust too. Which is why my bookshelves are very dusty. I should clean them.

Anne Kimball 15 pts

I love the library, too. Such a special place. Though I must say, it's become a bit of an overwhelming thing visiting there with so many kids. Not so much visiting, but keeping track of all the books and returning them before the overdue fines amass to the level of our national debt. Wrote a post about how we ended up playing the system: http://bringingboryahome.blogspot.com/2012/02/library-card.html

I'm so ahamed....

sassymonkey 766 pts moderator

Anne Kimball That makes me a little sad. I know fines are a pain in the butt but it's also part of what funds libraries.

scaron 10 pts

My kids and I recently signed up for library cards at our local library. I am struggling with whether to let them keep their own or whether I should hold onto them for now -- so far, I am keeping them, but I totally understand the specialness that comes with being the master of your own card.
