A Good Hard Look

A Good Hard Look: I Wanted To Yell at the Characters

A Good Hard Look is a well spun story of several people, young and old, at important intersections in their lives. It's set in the dreamy steamy town of Milledgeville, Georgia over an almost two year span. The characters lead mostly ordinary lives which made reading about them easy and almost too comfortable.  Read more >

A Good Hard Look Brings Flannery O’Connor to Life

I didn’t know anything about Flannery O’Connor before I read A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano. I must confess I didn’t realize the novel was set in the 60’s until the last third of the book, and I didn’t know Flannery was a writer and real, living person. I went into the book without any idea of time or place, but it didn’t matter -- I was immediately sucked into the verdant world that Napolitano created. I could not put this book down. I was captivated.  Read more >

A Good Hard Look: You Won’t Be Able to Put it Down

The first few pages of A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano were so lushly packed with intrigue and beautiful writing I knew I wouldn’t be able to put the book down until it was finished. With a succulent and smooth writing style, Napolitano creates relatable but curious characters and puts you on nail-biting edge right from the start. You know that wonderful but yet uncomfortable squirmy feeling?  Read more >

Good Writers Are Not Saints

A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano is set in small town Georgia. The story opens with the wedding of Melvin and Cookie Whiteson. With an opening like that, I assumed the novel would be a happy, romantic tale of life in the Deep South. I couldn't have been more wrong!  Read more >

A Good Hard Look: Fabulous Southern Fiction

I have a soft spot for books set in the South. I suppose this is strange, considering I was raised in New England by Midwestern parents. But if a story has characters that speak with a Southern lilt and just so happen to live in a close knit small town under weeping willows, I can't resist it. Add to that a world famous author as one of the characters, and I'm sold. So it's no surprise how much I loved A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano: Southern setting, close knit community, and added to that is Flannery O'Connor as one of the characters. What's not to love?  Read more >

The Truth Looks Better on Everyone: A Good Hard Look

An intricately woven story of what happens when you force yourself to be someone you're not, instead of being the best version of yourself, A Good Hard Look is deeply moving, painful and fascinating. One of the best books I've read in a very long time!  Read more >
