Rules of Civility is Absolutley Delightful

BlogHer Review

When I wish to describe Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, these are the words that come to mind.

Admittedly, it took me a few chapters to get into the flow of this book. After the prelude and first chapter, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. At the fourth chapter, when something rather exciting happened, I was then intrigued.

Immediately I found myself identifying with Katey Kontent, the protagonist. Reserved, thoughtful, and a little more on the safe side Katey and her side kick Eve Ross take the nights by storm and yawn their way through the days.

Upon meeting Tinker Grey they silently compete for his affections until the 4th chapter when things drastically change for everyone.

As I followed Katey along her path in life, there were times when I wasn’t sure what I thought. Did I understand her actions? Not always.

I was enchanted with Wallace Walcott from the very beginning and he helped me put Tinker in the back of my mind for a while. I rooted for these two, thoroughly enjoying the scene where they wrapped Christmas presents for the future as he was about to go off to war.

The writing was absolutely lovely and even during the few times the book slowed down for me, the writing kept me engrossed and ready to move forward.

All in all, the story was absolutely delightful and made me really sit and wonder what it would have been like to be in my 20’s during that time of the century.
