Rules of Civility has Unexpected Surprises Around Every Turn
Have you ever started reading a book and thought you knew exactly how it would end? Well that is just how I felt after reading the first couple chapters of Amor Towles' Rules of Civility. However, once I finished chapter four, all my preconceived notions flew right out the window with a few twists and turns still on the horizon.
The book begins in a New York City jazz club on New Years Eve where two roommates, Katey and Eve, are celebrating the end of another year. Before the night is over, Katey and Eve meet a man by the name of Tinker Grey, who looks like he is the whole package, but will unintentionally turn both their lives upside down. Over the course of the next year, Katey tells of the various people that come into her life and events that stem from that unforgettable last night of 1937.
While I assumed this was going to be another love story, which I am a big fan of, Amor Towles provided his reader with a well-rounded story, full of anger, heartache, some happiness, as well as a little love mixed in for good measure. When I thought I knew what was going to happen next, another individual or experience was introduced that changed the story’s direction.
I was not quite sure what to expect when I picked up Rules of Civility, but, as usual, once I got to know the characters and surroundings, I could not wait to find out what happened next.
