What Happened to Goodbye? Hello Good Read!
I'm tired of reading Facebook posts from friends about the latest deep, obscure Oprah-approved book devoid of any real dialogue. I'm convinced people read those books just to impress their friends. I'm a mom to a 3 year old and a 5 year old (who -- by the way -- are both running circles around me as I type this review!) and I don't have time to read modern day classics just to prove my intellect.
Sarah Dessen's What Happened to Goodbye might be classified as teen lit,but it is exactly the kind of book that fits in to my busy life. Just because it is young adult, doesn't mean it is filled with trivial teen drama and little words. It is however a very quick read because you want to dive into the main character's life and get to the heart of the story. Liz, or Elizabeth, or Beth or Mclean -- what the main character is calling herself -- she's mature and intelligent and easy to relate.
Maybe I liked this “teen” novel because I didn't have to carry a thesaurus to decipher the words, or maybe I liked it because it talked about food quite a bit in the first chapter! Or maybe I need to be honest and just tell you I miss the old glory days of high school and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
My kids are still running circles around me -- shrieking at headache inducing levels -- but I'll manage because later today I am going to visit my local library and find more of Sarah Dessen's young adult books to let my mind run away for a little vacation.
