Daylight savings marks the beginning of winter hibernation. Instead of mourning the early sunset, we rejoice the beginning of our winter evening ritual. Like all great customs it has rules that must be obeyed: a big fire, a big red wine, a juicy book, a comfy chair and an early bedtime (snuggled in under our big down comforter).

We just shared on The Daily Beast how we got the shivers (and we’re still healthy) reading The Great Influenza by John Barry, a chilling account of the great influenza pandemic of 1918. ( And, we wonder who has actually been able to get the vaccine?  Forget about the healthy and low risk groups. The young, the pregnant, the infirm--where is it? We're curious has your community had a supply?)

We also just finished Olive Kitteridge, and, yes, it deserved all the accolades. Who doesn’t love Olive?  Speak up, we want to know.

Tracy Kidder’s latest– Strength in What Remains– is yet another great book from this amazing author.

For a wickedly satirical read, grab Evelyn Waugh’s classic A Handful of Dust. We just finished it the other day– delicious. You won’t put it down. One of those books that takes you to different worlds (on the rare occasion thatwww.kayak.com/buzz lets you down).

Family holidays giving you a different kind of shiver? Then read Anne Enright’s The Gathering– it’ll make even your family look sane.

(Oh, and by the way our book is coming soon. Just counting down the days until December 29! www.bitchesonabudget.com)

It’s cold and dark, baby. Go to bed early armed with a good book.

Then tell us what you’ve loved lately under the covers (books, please).

Check out Lorrie Moore-- I think you'd like her. Not terribly impressed with the new novel, but some of her stories (recently collected in one volume) are magnificent.

I, too, loved Shanghai Girls. Can't wait to read Corner of Bitter and Sweet Xo Roz

Thanks for the tip!  Two great books I've read recently are Shanghai Girls by Lisa See and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.  Both describe life of Chinese immigrants living on the West Coast during World War II.  I highly recommend them.
