Boy's Short Haircuts: A Gallery
By Cozy Friedman on August 02, 2013
These are the “Dog Days of Summer” and for most boys that means lots of sports, swimming and sun. A short boys haircut is the best way to beat the heat, and short boys hairstyles don’t have to be boring. Here are the four most popular shorter boys’ styles that we do in my salons and different ways to wear them.

Boys’ Spiky Haircut
The spiky look is best achieved when a buzz cut begins to grow out, or by using longer settings on hair clippers. You want enough hair to work with, but short enough that on busy mornings no maintenance is required. Spikes don’t have to be dramatic, but there’s lots of room for self-expression here.
Get the Look: Work some styling gel through hair, then spike up hair on top and smooth out the sides
The Schoolboy Haircut
This classic style is easy to maintain and is adorable as a nice and neat look or as tossled as you want.
Get the Look: Apply a small amount of styling cream throughout the hair to reduce frizz for a polished look. Using a comb, create a side part and brush styling cream throughout hair for an even finish. Comb from part straight down on the shorter side. On the longer side, create the sweep by combing the hair downward slightly until you reach the middle of the forehead and begin coming upwards again placing all of the hair behind the ears.
The Surfer Haircut
This is a truly California sporty style and it works best with slightly longer hair (for the boys that don’t want to go too short). While the style is slightly messy (like he just woke up), it actually takes a little bit of work.
Get the Look: Do not use gel but instead apply styling cream on your hands and work thru his hair with fingers until you get the desired “effortlessly messy” look. No brush or comb needed. Just leave it as is!
The Buzz Cut
Simply the best style for hot weather, the Buzz Cut has been a classic forever. It’s great for sports especially when he wears a hat, and is easy to maintain.
Get the Look: It’s best to let a stylist do the buzz, but here are some tips:
- Leaving hair longer on the top makes the buzz look less harsh
- The #1 setting on a hair clipper is the closest you can get to a shaved head
- Settings #2 and #3 are similar to each other, and leave hair a little longer
- There is a #4 setting, but it is less popular—boys generally just want the full buzz
There you have it! Keep’em cool and looking cool at the same time. Boys’ short hair does not have to be boring!
