3:00 p.m. MST: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer stated in a press conference that she is heartbroken, and that Rep. Giffords is a friend. She asks the people of Arizona and America to keep the victims and their families in their prayers, pray for their recovery and that they never have to suffer such a tragedy in Arizona again. Gov. Brewer acknowledged risks for public figures.

Calling Rep. Giffords "as tough as they come," President Obama said that she is an extraordinary public servant, someone who is warm, caring and well-liked by her colleagues and constituents. Her husband Mark Kelly is a Navy captain and an astronaut. President Obama said that at the time of the shooting she was listening to her neighbors, the essense of what our democracy is all about. He said that during this tragedy for Arizona and the country, what Americans do in times of tragedy to support each other.

One patient died, five were in critical condition in the operating room and four were in stable condition without life-threatenting injuries. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is alive, Dr. Rhee said. Neurosurgeons have completed operating, she is responding to commands and at the time he is very optimistic about her recovery.

Dr. Rhee said that the person who died at the hospital was a young child of approximately nine years of age.

1:55 MST: Deputy Rich Kastigar of the Pima County Sheriff's Office identified the gunman as Jared Laughner, 22, in a press conference. Kastigar stated that the gun used was a pistol with an extended magazine. They do not know if Laughner acted alone, and are investigating how he arrived at the scene. Deputy Kastigar stated that there was a Federal employee who was very seriously injured, but did not identify this individual.

"This is a dynamic event. It is still evolving," Deputy Kastigar said, indicating that he did not want to release too many details. Another press event will occur at 6 p.m. CST.

1:17 MST: Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) released this statement.

“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff.  An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve.  Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society.  Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families.  This is a sad day for our country."

For anyone who is interested in one view of what it is like to be in Tucson these days I just posted under News and Politics.

People follow the lead of our country's leaders, and are influenced strongly by media, and that frightens me these days. We look to them to provide role models but what are they showing us? Crosshairs over opponents, guns in policial campaign ads as proof of being American? Rude language and behavior, intolerance at all levels.

And now some very good people suffered the biggest loss of all. Perhaps he was a random case, but the rhetoric, name-calling and threatening behvaior of our leaders has got to tone down for all of our sakes.

Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to write this yesterday, Laurie. And deal with the expected negativity that follows being the messenger.

Thank you, Laurie. Your post clarified for me some things that have been unclear elsewhere.

This is devastating. When my daughter mentioned the nine-year-old and judge to me, I thought she was referring to a completely different incident. I could believe it. Sometimes it's all too much.

this was an act of a sick person. if you went to the youtube link, it is clear that this character was sick and was planning this for a while, regardless of his political views. if it wasn't one thing it would have been another. thoughts and prayers to everyone who was there and is effected.

This is an very sad moment for our Country. I can't imagine that any politician had this in mind when they put cross hairs on Rep Gifford or talked about 2nd Amendment remedies. We must all remember that highly charged words may have an impact beyond just grabbing attention.

Please clarify. Who is not being civil?

I agree that the focus should be off of Palin and on the horrible losses suffered in Tucson today -- dead children, people whose lives were forever changed. Very sad, and hopefully something that will remind people that politics is irrelevant when human lives are lost for no reason.

Yes, people have died, and there is much pain involved. Escalated language and accusations are not helpful.

Solutions and ideas for peaceful resolution are welcome.

Thanks.

Please give me an example of a time when the tea party has advocated violence. You won't find one I would wager. Yes, people have died and people are ALL feeling the pain and fear of this incident. It is not a time to be spreading lies!

I find it interesting that you feel my snark begs a call for “decency,” yet people trying to connect a heinous mass murder to an innocent woman because of her opposing political views does not.

You make some statements I can agree with, but then you say,

“But there has been a consistent amplified threats of violence from certain parts of the GOP, Republican and Tea Party supporters. There is also on-going destructive activities in Washington, DC. When political spokespersons and organizations make violent statements and people die then yes, folks might want to look your way. It is justified.”

What does that even have to do with anything in this thread? We're talking about a crime committed by a lunatic here. “Consistent, amplified threats of violence?” Really? I’d love to see a list of those. Apparently the left isn’t paying attention to political polls or the last election. Few people are buying that ridiculous, tired, alarmist rhetoric about the Tea Party and the G.O.P. being the ultimate in evil. Large, peaceful Tea Party gatherings occur daily, crushing the paranoid myth born out of Progressives apparently not being able to simply argue the issues and let things go. Tea Party candidates have been elected. Some people who were not backed by the G.O.P. or the Tea Party were elected. Lo and behold, they lived! The events of today and the rapidity of where the Left was willing to place the blame before they even knew any facts says a lot about how eager they are to make their delusions of violent threats by the G.O.P. a self-fulfilling prophecy. How twisted is that?

This “threat of violence” by the Big Bad Wolf of a Tea Party that the left has invented just isn’t credible. The majority of this country is not buying it. Sarah Palin has long ago drawn her crosshairs, and nothing perished except her stupid reality show and a couple of justifiably pissed off moose.

This is a breaking news story. People have died. Sarah did not do the shooting. Agreed.

But there has been a consistent amplified threats of violence from certain parts of the GOP, Republican and Tea Party supporters. There is also on-going destructive activities in Washington, DC.

When political spokespersons and organizations make violent statements and people die then yes, folks might want to look your way. It is justified.

Having said that, good people, on both sides of the isle have said the amount of rancor is too high. If Palin is an example of that then so be it.

People are in real pain here. This is not the time for snark, no matter what you opinion or beliefs.

It breaks my heart that a child has been killed. I did not ask if her parents where progressive or conservative.

It should not matter. How we go forward does matter.

Whatever has happened to the "Sarah Palin Caused Mass Murder" vibe that was happening in the previous comments? It seems to have been abruptly cut short for some reason. What happened to the way-too-early birds that made comments before doing anything but hysterically skimming HuffPo with their Nonfat Mocha Joka Lattes spilling from Palinrage?

Oh well. You'll just have to look with hope to the next psycho killer rampage that you can pin on Sarah Palin. Obviously you relish the hell out of doing so, or you would have stopped to gather information on this horrible tragedy before you tried to give it political underpinnings that simply weren't there.

I am shocked but not surprised by this news given the inflammatory language being used. I just wrote about this: http://workingmomdemocrat.blogspot.com/2011/01/whe... ( http://workingmomdemocrat.blogspot.com/2011/01/whe... )

We were having lunch with a friend and my blackberry kept buzzing, but I didn't check it until he left and Josh came into the room to tell me the news. He's upstairs watching coverage on television. I can't. I'm just too sick.

I don't understand how a politician can create a list with crosshairs over districts and using gun terminology talk about taking back the 20 and not have this be considered a case of violent hate speech. If I drew crosshairs on a map of my street over my neighbour's house and wrote about how we need to take back the block, I'd be in jail.

If we use violent terminology to talk about invoking change, we get violence.

I am brokenhearted for Gifford's family. Terrified for this country and brokenhearted for her.
