The breastfeeding total elimantion diet is ovah! & how Zantac caused protein intolerance in my six mo old.

I have been eating whatever my little heart pleases for over a week now and James' poop looks better than ever! It's incredible. I am 100% convinced that the Ranitidine (Zantac) is what was causing the protein intolerances and horrible poop. His eczema has COMPLETELY cleared too. Unfreakinbelievable.

Let me break it down for ya:

Antacids: block or limit stomach acid production. Stomach acid is essential in protein digestion. When proteins are not digested they enter into the bloodstream with their big ol' fat selves and the body processes them as allergens. Mucus production is increased (which in turn can irritate the lining of the gut SO much that bleeding can occur) and we see this in the form of the very nasty, bloody diapers. Take a look at this:

An adequate supply of stomach acid is REQUIRED for protein digestion and mineral absorption. This acid helps the stomach to break down food before it enters the intestines. The use of antacid medication MAY cause food to enter the intestines before it is FULLY broken down by digestion. Stomach acid also facilitates the flow of bile and pancreatic enzymes, which further assist digestion of foods.

The poorly digested proteins (provided in food, including milk) are then...
EITHER absorbed into the blood supply, increasing the risk of an allergic reaction; OR
PASS undigested into the large bowel where they may cause gastro-intestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal bloating and gas.
According to Professor Erika Jensen-Jarolim and colleges at the University of Vienna, regular use of antacids can increase the risk of food allergies. Medications that reduce acid secretion OR neutralize the acidity within the stomach may be setting up a situation where harmless food proteins become potential allergens, which can then trigger an immune system response resulting in an allergic reaction.

Unbelievable, huh? I just can't believe that it took so long for me to put this together. And I cannot believe that out of all the doctors we saw that not a single one of them thought of this. DUMBASSES. Just goes to show that no one cares about your child like YOU do. You have to be their advocate and must be proactive about their health.

So. What have I been eating lately?

  • Reese's Eggs.
  • pizza.
  • cheese. LOTS.
  • ice cream. Mint Chocolate Chip. How I missed thee.
  • cream of soups.
  • cookies.
  • SHRIMP.
  • Hamburgers!!

I am so incredibly happy to be done with that horrible diet. And I am proud of myself that I made it through and continued to breastfeed. ::pats self on back:: I have prayed, and prayed, and prayed for God to heal my little boy's tummy. Cried out, gotten down on my knees and begged God to heal my baby and it appears that He did! THANK YOU JESUS! (now if only that flat spot on his head would pop out) Such a huge weight lifted off my shoulders!

Now I can live my life again.
