Bringing the Labor to Labor Day

Once you buy a house, long weekends that used to be reserved for barbeques, sleeping in, and laughing are now days for going to the hardware store, tackling larger projects, and swearing. And remembering that you brought all of this "fun" opon yourself.

M and C Build a House installed a window that they have been putting off for months.

This was more precarious than it looks. This spot is on the north side of the house, which, because of the slope of our hill, is the highest part of the exterior. So what you can’t see is that Michael had to climb about 20 feet up in the air while carrying the window and is now cavalierly balanced at the top of a very tall ladder. We suppose that’s his punishment for...something.

Over at 1870 House, they finished painting painting their living room, cleaned up and moved their furniture back to it's proper places. Always the worst part of any project is the clean up. The fact that they did it right after their project was done is impressive.

The folks at Fixer Upper finished up their master bedroom closet. Oh I have closet envy. My old house is sorely lacking in closet space.

This Old Crack House has smooth walls.

In my spare time I smooth out walls. I have done so many like this that I don't need to sand much anymore. I know I have stated in the past that I detest textured walls and ceilings and I have found that the easiest way to smooth out textured walls is to apply joint compound to them...

What does it take to do this? A strong arm, 4 days and about 4 buckets of joint compound per room. Is it worth it? That depends on whether you detest textured walls as much as I do!

Reviving Our Colonial Revival
shows that even the best intentions are sometimes laid aside for no other reason than most of the time projects take way longer than you estimate. My general rule of thumb is to quadruple the amount of time that I think something will take and then I can rest safely with the knowledge that I will be half way done at that point.

If I were to ever shingle a building again, I would think about finding a way to stain the shingles before putting them up. We did consider this, but had no idea where we would ever have space to lay and store them (6 or 7 bundles) during the staining process. I had trouble getting the stain in all of those nooks and crannies between each shingle. Really, I'm just hoping we never have to cross that road again.

Georgetown House has just made the decision to not try and salvage original wood floors in their kitchen, for many reasons including the fact that they need to be handscraped of all the linoleum and glue from the floor the previous owners put down.

Add all those together, and it just seems not worth the effort. Not cost effective, not time effective, and no guarantees that I wouldn't slit my wrists with a floor scraper before we were 1/4 of the way done.

Jeanne, from House in Progress, visited Danielle, Foodmomiac, for a fun night of playing Bunco, when Danielle's ceiling began leaking. Luckily Jeanne was there to diagnose the problem and lance the ceiling. The first thing I thought was,
"Why doesn't this ever happen to me?" I have a head filled with home renovation knowledge. I could be a Renovator Superhero too!

As for my house, what did we do with our long weekend aside from shuttling people back and forth to various sporting events. My husband finished sanding the bedroom that will belong to my 10 yr old son. A bigger project than that simple sentence portrays. I was supposed to get it all primed this week in anticipation of painting the final color. But like Reviving Our Colonial Revival, my time and energy fizzled out.

When she isn't blogging at Notes From the Trenches, Chris is working to rescue her house from a century of bad taste and neglect.

Chris, darling, you are welcome to come be my superhero ANY time. And I will happily provide the tortilla chips and white wine.

Hey wow, I read most of those blogs regularly, and the ones I don't -- thanks for turning me on to them. We just decided to keep the ox blood finish we found under the paint on an old door I spent two years stripping.

Fixing up an old house is NOT fun...
