Business Advice That Might Convince You to Attend BlogHer Entrepreneurs '12

Talk to any successful person, and I’d place money that they would have something to say about the person or people who helped them get where they are today. Whether directly or indirectly, no one really sails a ship to success island alone. That’s why BlogHer Entrepreneurs is awesome for those of you looking to set sail this year in your business endeavors -- or even just start building your boat. If you missed our first announcement about our amazing mentors, you should check it out.
What I think is awesome about the BlogHer community is that people understand the power of mentoring, of supporting other people when they need it most. Right before we announced our first round of mentors, Tara Hunt of Buyosphere.com sent our co-founder Elisa Camahort Page a bummed-out email that she couldn’t attend due to a conflict on the dates of the conference (March 22 & 23, 2012) -- but that she still wanted to help out in some way. We thought it might benefit those who are still sitting on the fence about whether attending would benefit their business plan if we interviewed Tara about her business journey.
What she says here is a bit about her business, her experience and the importance mentors play in any business plan.
JH: Tell us a little bit about your business.
TH: Buyosphere.com is a peer to peer search engine for shopping. Instead of searching for hours online for a product and wondering if you are missing something, you go to Buyosphere and just ask. Then sit back and relax while your search is crowdsourced to people who know how to shop or have done the research already. We get questions on everything from people looking for what to wear to a graduation ceremony (don't know where to start) to people who have been looking for a specific item, but can't track it down. It was born out of my growing frustration with shopping online. There is too much choice and personalization isn't web-wide. No search engine can determine my taste, but people with a bit of guidance can!
JH: What has your timeline to business success been like?
TH: Depends on when you start the clock! I first started thinking about how to solve this problem in 2006 or 2007. I focused on it when I found my co-founders in 2010. It's been two years of pivots and mistakes and dead ends until we came up with the current version that was launched two months ago. I feel like we are finally moving forward and on track!
JH: For those who are still unsure as to whether or not they should attend Entrepreneurs this year, what advice could you give them?
TH: I wouldn't have survived the last few years of business without being surrounded by fellow female entrepreneurs. I get the best advice, camaraderie, connections, support and ideas from other female founders. Aside from the sage wisdom you will get from the presenters and sessions, you will find bonds that will get you through the craziest times in your fellow attendees.
JH: For those who can't attend due to conflicts (like you!), what small business advice would you like to impart?
TH: Find a champion. Not just a mentor, but a champion. Someone who will introduce you to the contacts you need to get to the next level. Someone who believes in you more than you will (most days) believe in yourself. I have one of those and she is amazing. She won't let me give up. And if she doesn't have someone I need to talk with in her speed-dial, she'll find me the number within hours.
I love Tara’s use of the word “champion.” I bet our first round of mentors would shy away from being called such a thing, but I would also bet that they could think of someone that was their champion along the way. I love that this conference brings people together to learn with and from one another, to boost each other up and to be more than a mentor. How awesome!
The good news is that there's still time to register for BlogHer Entrepreneurs. If you want one of the few remaining slots for the conference (open only to 100 attendees), register here!
