Should Mamas Let Their Babies Grow Up to Be Journalism Majors?

According to a recent news report, Kevin Li is an accomplished high school student who thinks the leadership and management experience he got from editing his school paper is more important for his future career than the fact that he aced his AP biology exam. Despite that (or perhaps because of it), he says his parents might not pay for college if he majors in journalism. ...more

Do you hate your job? your business? your life? Here's a simple start for a better 2010

If you hate your job, your business or your life right now, please know that you are not alone. It wasn't too long ago that I felt the heaviness of not enjoying my daily work. And the worse part was, I had no idea how to get out of it. I had created an unworkable plan and it was up to me to extract myself from it. During those miserable days (OK, truth is it was more like months), I really had to do some deep soul searching. Here's a simple outline of how I found a "new start": ...more

Confliction

I was going to post about my sister. You didn't know I had a sister? Well, sort of. She passed away when she was a baby. But, I figured it's not my place to tell such a personal story, my mom has access to this blog though I'm sure she doesn't read it. I wrote down the whole story- beginning to end, as whole stories are want to have- so maybe at a future point I'll share it with you. Spoiler alert though- I cried while finishing it. It's a sad story (but all baby deaths are). So, I'll talk about my interview today. I had an interview today. ... ...more

How to Ace a Job Interview via Webcam

Say the words job interview and most people are intimidated enough.  Yet now there is a new variable to add to the mix for your interview preparation. Because of the sheer number of applicants these days coupled with the high cost of travel, more and more recruiters and companies are using webcams to conduct video interviews with job candidates. Support Women: Say No to the Bo-Tax!

I am an idiot. For almost five months now, I have been worrying that any national health plan that was passed by Congress would not cover abortion services. It turns out that I have been wringing my hands over the exact wrong thing. What really, really, really scares American women - including the president of NOW, Terry O'Neil - are proposals levy an "almost 5%" tax on critical women's health services: breast augmentations, facelifts, tummy tucks and other procedures. Gasp!!!! ...more

Five Good Reasons To Own Your Mistakes

Journalist Rachel Sklar recently fessed up to a mistake on her part. I admire her public apology greatly. Not only did she admit the mistake that critics called her out on but she owned responsibility for the mistake, didn't attempt to blame others and promised to not only to make an effort to fix this mistake but to also do better in the future. And because she was so transparent in her confession and apology I am willing to take a chance on her again. ...more

Pumpkin Spice Latte & Frugalista Chic

Ahh... the holidays are upon us... Images of sugar plums dancing in our heads while dreaming if Santa Claus will be providing us with treats (or a big fat lump of coal) under our Christmas trees. Who am I kidding?! That is what I want.. those images on the books I read to my son at bedtime. ...more

Obama's Role in the Black Unemployment Crisis

Ahh Obama. His presidency has brought joy and pain (like sunshine and rain). Joy, as many across the world rejoiced at the fact that an African-American man, (yes I know he is part-white but widely perceived as Black, don't hate), a Democrat, and someone who at least on face value seems relatively sane, is President. ...more

80 percent chance of stress. sigh.

I just took an online stress test and scored a 431. Anything over 300 means a high probability of stress-related illness. My probability was 80 percent. Is bitchiness considered a stress-related illness?...more
