Today is National Lollipop Day. But rather than focus on the standard lollipops we all remember as the cause of multiple cavities as children, I want us to take a look at this new and improbable craze that has swept our fair nation: cake pops.
Now cake pops are not something I can get behind whole-heartedly. After all they are ONLY ONE BITE OF CAKE!
Seriously, one. bite.
It would take, like, 8 or more to satisfy the average cake craving.
I mean, sure, cake pops are tasty little treats with a "pop" of delicious flavor. But that just leaves you craving more bites. And since cake pops in Starbucks and other establishments range over id=mce_marker each, you could easily spend upwards of id=mce_marker0 or more on cake pops.
Not that spending medium-sized sums of money on good desserts is a bad thing. I myself have spent ungodly amounts of money on finding the perfect creme brulee in my travels around America.
No, it is the embarrassment factor.
Say, you go to your local coffee shop/bakery and order a couple of cake pops. You sit down and pop one in your mouth. Then another. Then you have to get back up and purchase a couple more because those weren't enough. And maybe you even have to get up a thrid time to buy more yummy cake pops. The people around you start to get uncomfortable and your debit card company calls about suspicious activity on your card because you are making multiple charges at the same location within a few minutes of each other.
The servers behind the counter start to whisper amongst themselves and point to you discreetly.
See? You should have just ordered the large slice of chocolate overload cake and been done with it.
I'm not saying to not buy cake pops. But ask yourself if one or two is enough to satisfy or if you need to just go ahead and splurge on the whole shebang to keep yourself happy.
And if you persist in your pursuit of cake pops despite my objections, here are some links to help you on your quest:
