Eating healthy and trying to maintain a healthy weight are important for our overall well being. But there is now growing evidence that eating anti-inflammatory foods can reduce symptoms of chronic illness and even prevent heart disease.

This is a diet plan that just about everyone can benefit from. And although this is not a weight loss diet, many people do lose weight simply because they are replacing unhealthy foods with healthier anti-inflammatory foods. Since arriving home this weekend I've spent the better part of the past 2 days food shopping, analyzing/modifying recipes and cooking.

My focus is 4-fold:

1. Re-gain the 9 lbs I lost due to the Endolymphatic Hydrops,
2. Stabilize my blood sugars to limit the possibility of another attack,
3. Keep my sodium intake to approx. 1000 mg/day and,
4. Ensure that I'm adding more anti-inflammatory foods to my diet, while limiting ingredients that cause inflammation.

Green Tea

Anti-inflammatory Agent: The flavonoids in green tea are potent natural anti-inflammatory compounds that have been shown in numerous studies to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Sidekicks: Water. What can be more cleansing for the body than contamination-free water?

Arch-Enemy: Processed cow’s milk. Non-organic milk carries antibiotics and growth hormone residues that can irritate immune system when they are consumed long-term. Many people, especially those in the East, also cannot digest milk properly, causing disruption in the digestive tract.

Papaya

Anti-inflammatory Agent: Coined by Christopher Columbus as the ‘fruit of the angels’, papaya contains papain, a protein-digesting enzyme. Together with other nutrients such as vitamin C and E, papain helps to reduce inflammation, and improves digestion and healing from burns.

Sidekicks: Pineapple. A tropical fruit worthy of mention, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids in the healing of indigestion, sports injury, trauma, arthritis, and other kinds of swelling. Extracts of bromelain have also proven to be as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Arch-Enemy: Preservative-laden fruits. Dried fruits can contain high levels of chemicals such as sulphur dioxide, a preservative which has been linked to increased respiratory disease. Eat fresh fruits whenever possible, but if you must opt for the dried form, make sure it’s preservative-free.

Broccoli

Anti-inflammatory Agent: Broccoli is a highly nutritious vegetable that contains anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer phytonutrients, which help the body to get rid of potentially carcinogenic compounds.

Sidekicks: Cauliflower. A close relative to broccoli, this cruciferous vegetable also contain similar goodness as broccoli that aids the body’s detoxification.

Arch-Enemies: Nightshades vegetables. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and others are classified as nightshade vegetables, which contain high alkaloid — a substance that may affect the joints, nerve-muscle function and digestion

This posting is obviously near and dear to my heart as Catapult Fitness is my blog.

I realize that there are likely skeptics in regards to the extent food plays in reversing chronic conditions.  The best case study I've found to date is Donald Gazzaniga.

Don was a writer/producer/director and owned a large production services
company  that provided film crews for many sitcoms back in the 1970s.  After being diagnosed with congestive heart failure and headed for a heart transplant (YES,
this man was on a list to receive a heart transplant!), Don, along with
his wife who is a Registered Dietitian, developed a meal plan for him
that kept his sodium intake to < 500 mg/day.

The result? Don’s name has been removed from the transplant list.

Change what you eat and not only will you change your health, but you'll likely be very happy with the reflection you see in the mirror!

I totally agree.  I was in chronic pain for at least 3-4 years.  The pain would radiate from one place to the next.  I had hives, stomach pain, muscle twitches, and just shear pain everywhere.  The spot could change from one day to the next or one minute to the next.  I went to a dermatolgist, had a colonoscapy, went to a rheumatologist.  Everyone told me I was fine.  But I knew I was not fine.  I am only 36 and I refused to believe that I would spend the rest of my life feeling terrible.  I have a family that I needed to tend to and I also was always tired.  Almost 3 months ago I decided to do the 21 day cleanse where you eliminate ....gluten, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and all animal  products from your diet for 21 days.  After two weeks I could not believe the differnce.  I took my daugther to great adventure and actually teared up because it was the first time in almost 4 years that NOTHING hurt me.  And I mean NOTHING.  I have continued with the Gluten Free diet and stay away from dairy at all costs.  I will eat animal protein once a week and have replaced sugar with Agave Nectar.  I have never had better night sleeps or better days or more energy in as long as I can remember.  I am only sad that I did not do this sooner.

I suffer from chronic inflammation and KNOW I need to adjust the way I eat even more than I already have.  Thank you for the great post and links.  This is the kick in the butt I need.
