Can I Know Anything about God?

I once heard Beth Moore say, "God is just as intentional about what He doesn't reveal to us about Himself as what He does." There is plenty He doesn't say and those are most probably the things we don't need to know or are incapable of understanding. However, God is not at all silent on the matter of who He is and provides for us more information on Himself than we could fully understand in multiple lifetimes. The good news for the day . . . God is indeed knowable.

The choice instrument of His self-revelation to us is His Word, the Bible. Now, you could argue that there are countless other ways by which He can choose to speak into our lives. Like the psalmist states in chapter 19, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known." But when we desire to discover exactly who God is we can find that He has told us.

The Gospel writer John says, in the opening lines of his epistle (v.14), "So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness." If you are familiar with John's gospel, you know that here the Word refers specifically to Jesus. But, earlier in that same chapter one, we discover that (v.1), "In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God." From the first moment the Holy Spirit prompts the pen of John to write this letter, John declares Jesus is God. They are the same; they are indeed one.

Point? One of the easiest ways to discover who God is, is to learn about the person of Jesus. Follow his life. Discover what He thought and what He taught. But use caution . . . Don't rely on what you think He thought and taught or always heard He said. Take the opportunity to discover for yourself what Jesus, the God-Man, did during his time on earth. The Gospel of John is a good place to start. This understanding of Jesus and His purpose on earth will open your heart and your mind to a more full understanding of the God of the Universe; and might even reveal to you extraordinary meaning in your own life.

Through His unfailing love,

Meg
