I love my family. I really do. My
parents are incredible people and my wonderful childhood is filled with
happy memories. My dad is a doctor and he's the kind of guy you want to
be YOUR doctor. He still makes house calls for his elderly and infirm
patients. He stays at the office until every patient who needs to be
seen has been seen. He is a big teddy bear. My mom is an artist. She is
a free spirit, she has a great sense of style and she looks about 20
years younger than she is. Seriously, I'd kill for her body. They grew
up in the 60s and got married in the 70s. They both immigrated to
Canada in their teens and they were never part of the counterculture of
their time. They had the pressure of parents who were here to make a
better life for their children, parents who survived more than I can
imagine in WWII.
They are both great people. Sometimes I catch
my dad lifting my mom up in a big bear hug in the kitchen and giving
her a big kiss on the lips. My sis and I would giggle whenever we saw
them displaying affection. It was cute. While most of our friends had
parents who split, ours stayed together. Times weren't always idyllic,
my parents went through their share of difficulties but they toughed it
out. They have worked hard all of their lives and they are now
thoroughly enjoying their empty nest. They love being grandparents and
they love having the freedom to go away on a last minute vacation.
I
recently posted about dog sitting for them. They went away last week on
a last minute vacation. My mom found a good deal at a resort in Mexico
and they decided to go. My parents have been to resorts like Club Med
before. They have no problem with adults only resorts (I'm sure they
prefer it). So my mother thought nothing of booking this "adults only"
resort.
When they got there they realized that something was
"not quite right". They were not phased by nude beaches. They had been
to resorts with nude or semi-nude beaches before. My mom thinks nothing
of it. But she did wonder about how openly the couples were...
displaying affection... She described what she saw to me on the phone,
"the places I've been to were subtle, people were discreet" she said.
Then she saw "people fondling in chairs".
Then there was the
naked volleyball game... where the losers got spanked. For sure they
knew something was up then... My mom told me how "grossed out" she was
that "some woman shouted, 'I want to get spanked', why would she do
that?" I tried (probably unsuccessfully) to contain my laughter at this
point.
In the evening, they were sitting in the dining room and
another couple started chatting with them. My mom remarked on how
friendly the woman was. All the way up until it got too friendly.
The woman asked my mom if they (she and my dad) were "alternative". My
dad immediately got red faced and said "NO." He promptly dragged my
confused mother away to try to explain to her the concept of
"swingers". (If at this point you're not laughing so hard you're crying
then I apologize... I'm not telling it right...)
My parents
ended up booking several "day trips" off the resort. They made the best
of it and came home... to a daughter that can't help but point and
laugh. I would have paid a LOT of good money to see the looks on their
faces...
Moral of the story: Check out the resort you're going to before you book.
