Caregiving has given me a lot of challenges in life... but a few surprising blessings. It prompted a total career change -- actually multiple career changes -- and opened whole new worlds to me.

When I started on my journey in Caregiverland, I had always thought I would be a journalist for life. I looooved the newsroom...the rhythms, the banter, the constant flow of interesting people and events. Never ever considered another career.

Then, I ended up in a suburbian wilderness when my ailing parents needed help. The journalism jobs were scarce, and I was bored during my job search period, so I ended up volunteering. That lead to a full-time job at Habitat for Humanity, and a new beginning with working in non-profits. The money wasn't very much, so I learned to freelance for construction trade publications -- and learned about the building industry. Then, a gig at a private college web site turned into a mentorship opportunity -- the online marketing expert hired by the school took me under his wing and showed me how he did his job. That lead to a new client...and then another.

Online marketing was the perfect career because it is eay to telecommute and used my communication skills I have finally turned full circle though-- i started a support blog for caregivers, where I use my journalism and geek skilz.

My new career gave me the flexibility to deal with doctor's appointments and crisis periods that comes with caregiving.

Has anyone else had to change careers because of caregiving for family members? Has it worked out to be a blessing?

First, I'm sending your post to the BlogHer Caregiving Group ( http://www.blogher.com/groups/caregiving-support-g... ) and we'd love to have you join if you're interested.

Next, no career changes yet because both TW and I work from home (thank goodness.) I did spend some time pondering what would happen if one of us no longer worked from home... that just led to anxiety I didn't want to deal with so I stopped thinking about it.

I love that your life went in such a different direction and that you're happy.
