Carving a Pumpkin

Pumpkins from the Pumpkin Patch
While we were at Gull Meadow Farms this past weekend, we got a couple of pumpkins. My husband and I each picked one out to carve. We forgot about one for Little Bird, we won’t forget next year though! I have not carved a pumpkin in years, so I thought it would be fun for us and a good sensory experience for Little Bird.
I let my husband cut the top of the pumpkin and take the pumpkin guts out. To me, they are just slimy and gross. I could do it if I really had to, but my husband was kind enough to do it for me At first Little Bird wasn’t so interested. She was more interested in playing with the dog or trying to eat grass. Once my husband got the top of the pumpkin open and some pumpkin guts out, Little Bird was all excited about the pumpkins.
Little Bird kept looking inside the pumpkin trying to figure it out. A few times she put her hand inside the pumpkin just to play around. My husband put all the pumpkin guts into a colander (he wanted to toast the seeds). Little Bird quickly found that to be the best thing ever. She sat right next to the colander and put both hands into the pumpkin guts.
I am so glad we changed her clothes first because pumpkin was everywhere. Soon she started putting the pumpkin in her mouth. She loved it, it was a great sensory experience for her. Little Bird didn’t swallow any of the pumpkin guts, she was more just experiencing them.
My husband and I both had fun carving pumpkins, I think Little Bird had the best time though. After she was all covered in pumpkin guts she decided she was done hanging around the pumpkins. She proceeded to crawl around in the grass. So along with pumpkin stains, grass and dirt stains were added. She was so adorable I just laughed with her. She got a much needed bath when we were done.
