For Celiac Awareness Month: Please Add to This List of Gluten-Free Blogs
by Kalyn Denny

October is Celiac Awareness Month in the United States, designated to encourage all types of public media to share information about celiac disease. There's no doubt that diagnosed cases of Celiac disease, sometimes called gluten intolerance, have risen dramatically in recent years, but the good news is that there's also a corresponding increase in resources for people who need to avoid gluten in their diet.

Google Health defines Celiac Disease as "an inherited, autoimmune disease in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged from eating gluten and other proteins found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats." No one knows whether the disease is really on the increase, or whether doctors are simply becoming more knowledgeable about the disease and better at accurately diagnosing it, but some reports are now saying that as many as one out of every 100 persons may have celiac.

Celiac disease is something I had only minimal awareness of when I started food blogging in early 2005, and I've watched the number of excellent blogs offering gluten-free recipes increase so that blogs about gluten-free eating are now one of the best resources for anyone seeking recipes that don't contain gluten. For Celiac Awareness Month I want to help spread the word about gluten-free food blogs, so I'm sharing links to a few gluten-free blogs I love.

Of course, I'll miss many more blogs than I'm able to mention, so I'm hoping BlogHer readers can help make this a more comprehensive list. If you have a gluten-free blog, or I miss your favorite gluten free blog, please tell us about it, and share a link to the blog in the comments. Together we can create a list that will be a great resource for forwarding to anyone who needs gluten free recipes.

(Disclaimer: The order in which blogs are mentioned here isn't any kind of ranking! I know some of these bloggers, so naturally their blogs will come to mind first. My apologies to any bloggers I know that are inadvertently left off the list, but please do add your link in the comments!)

Karina's Kitchen ~ One of the most visually appealing blogs you'll find, Karina serves up "gluten free recipes with a side of life." This blog has a long list of Gluten-Free Resources and Blogs, and sponsors a Gluten-Free Recipe Search. Karina also recently wrote a post about Gluten-Free Cooking for Simply Recipes.

Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef ~ Gluten-free girl Shauna is a former teacher turned blogger and cookbook author who now cooks and blogs about delicious food with the chef, her husband and co-author. Her Gluten-Free Links has resources for information about celiac, as well as a list of other gluten-free blogs.

Elana's Pantry ~ I enjoyed meeting blogger and cookbook author Elana when we were on a panel together recently at BlogHer Food, and her blog is "a place for organic gluten free recipes and tips for good living." Besides wonderful recipes, this blog also has a Gluten-free forum where readers share in the discussion.

A Year of Slow Cooking ~ This is a blog of slow cooker recipes, all of which happen to be gluten-free. Stephanie O'Dea started the blog with a goal of using her crockpot every day for a year, and she's since written a cookbook of gluten-free slow cooker recipes that's getting a lot of good press.

Celiac Chicks ~ Kim and Kelly are the dual force behind Celiacchicks.com, a comprehensive site they call "the guide to a hip & healthy gluten-free lifestyle. Besides recipes, this site can help with information about gluten-free restaurants, gluten-free bakeries, gluten-free products, and book reviews.

Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free ~ In the six years she's been living sugar and gluten-free, blogger Amy Green has lost sixty pounds. Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free is the blog where she shares the recipes that are helping her maintain that weight loss and stay healthy.

Book of Yum ~ This is a blog featuring "gluten-free vegetarian recipes and reviews." There's a good list of gluten-free links with information about celiac and a list of gluten-free blogs, and this blog also sponsors a monthly event called Adopt a Gluten-Free blogger where bloggers sign up to feature another gluten-free blogger on their site.

The W.H.O.L.E. Gang ~ This gluten-free blog written by Diane Eblin focuses on "Whole Healthy Organic Living Everyday." Besides recipes, she has a blogroll of gluten-free and dairy-free blogs, shares sources for gluten-free products, and is starting a list of Gluten-Free blog events.

There are many, many more excellent blogs focused on gluten-free recipes, so please help people find them by telling us about the blog in the comments if you have additions to this list.

Kalyn Denny also blogs at Kalyn's Kitchen, where she's focused on creating low-glycemic recipes using fresh ingredients. Kalyn often blogs recipes that just happen to be gluten-free, and plans to add a gluten-free recipes category so people can find things like Baked Brown Rice Tortilla Chips or Low-Sugar and Flourless Zucchini Muffins.

GFCF Mommy!

I have to give a shoutout to Gluten Free Casein Free Mommy, although I must add a disclaimer that she's my cousin, so my fandom is also familial. Still, her tips are terrific, her recipes are excellent, and her insights are fantastic. I recommend her for those seeking a GFCF lifestyle, just a GF lifestyle, and also those who are raising autistic kids, 'cause the blog covers all those topics, and does so with aplomb!

So many gluten free blogs out there...

Because there are, I think, over a hundred gluten free recipe blogs, I decided there were already enough - so I just started an occasional product review blog for gluten free products. It's at 100% Gluten Free.

There's also a great vegetarian gluten free blog at Wheatless and Meatless which has lots of great recipes - including 3 different easy recipes for economical gluten free energy bars.

It's Not a Blog, but...

thank you, Kalyn

Thank you for including me in this round-up!

I'd like to vouch for Shirley at Gluten Free Easily, and include Alison from Sure Foods Living----both phenomenal women who have taught me gobs of information.

We were thrown for a loop when we were first diagnosed in our family, and I immediately turned to the internet, where I found "real" people who walked me through my fears and concerns and held my hand as I waded through the information. I can't thank them enough.

hooray for GF blogs!

Amy from Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free already added me (http://tastyeatsathome.wordpress.com), so thank you to Amy! And Kalyn, thank you for posting this! I find that I run into more and more people that are trying to follow a gluten-free diet, so it's always wonderful to find places that we all can go to find recipes, hints, etc.

So glad the list of gluten free blogs
continues to grow!

Thanks to evreyone who's adding their blogs.  Hope it will continue to grow into a very comprehensive list of blogs writing about gluten-free foods.

The Crazy Kitchen

After suffering years of chronic heaches and brain fog I am now a newly converted Gluten Free-girl.

I feel so alive!

I focus on embracing the challange of making amazingly delicious meals sans-gluten.  Good food should taste great no matter what.  And as an added bonus they're good for you too!

You can see for yourself at http://thecrazykitchen.blogspot.com/

I would also like to add The Gluten Free homaker to the list

Great list!

Thanks for a great topic, Kalyn!

My blog, Eat This, has focused on gluten-free foods since this summer.  I use a lot of whole grains and vegetables, as well as local ingredients when possible.

I would also like to add Wheat Free Meat Free, obviously a vegetarian, gluten-free food blog.  Kalinda recently started a gluten-free carnival to highlight recipes from a variety of gf blogs.

KitchenTherapy.us

Hi Kalyn,

Thanks for the list and the offer to list more blogs. Kitchen Therapy overcomes your gluten free issues with simple, healthy, delicious recipes. We use whole grain gluten free flours and home grown produce in many recipes. And we shoot for beautiful pictures. (Pun intended.) Sometimes we succeed.

And I'd like to offer my friends blog,  Gluten Free Betsy. http://www.glutenfreebetsy.com/ Betsy offers product reviews, some recipes, and Chicago area restaurant reviews. All from the lively perspective of a 20 something long time celiac.

Gluten Free and Grain Free

I'm so glad to see a list of Gluten-free websites. I have one as well. http://mrsedsresearchandrecipes.blogspot.com   My child came out of autism three weeks into the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (a gluten free and grain free diet). During this time I noticed I felt better on his food. It turns out the mysterious autoimmune problems I had been suffering my whole life were caused by Celiacs and Crohn's. I do eat a few gluten free grains, just limit them, so I like to visit other Gluten-Free sites. But in our home I try to make everything SCD compatible

I love our gluten free community!!  We ROCK!

I'd like to add my Hold The Gluten blog and podcast to the list.

The blog portion focuses on my own GF recipes as well as product reviews. The podcast portion (which can be downloaded via iTunes) provides a glimpse into my “day in the life" with Celiac Disease. I also relay tips, product information, gluten free events and discuss listener feedback.

GF in the City

This is such a wonderful idea!  It's great to see that some of the blogs I love are here already and I'm looking forward to discovering new ones.  My blog is GF in the City.  Things have been a little hectic, so I've been away for a while, but I have a ton of GF recipes in the works that I'll be sharing soon!  Hope you guys can stop on by!

Thanks all!!

Love seeing the list grow.

Also wanted to comment that apparently there is some confusion as to when Celiac Awareness Month is.  I wrote this when I received two different notices from PR people talking about it being in October, but apparently there has been some move to change it to May to coincide with the observance in other countries.  (Edit:  Here is a link sent to me by Kelly from Cleliac Chciks which confirms that most organizations have joined together to move Celiac Awareness month to May.) Wish I had saved the PR notices that were sent to me so I could pass this information on to them, but still it seems like a good topic any time of year.
