Charlaine Harris Announces the End of Sookie Stackhouse

Last week, Charlaine Harris announced that Sookie Stackhouse's days are numbered. Following the May 3 release of Dead Reckoning, Harris will probably only write and release two more novels in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series and then it's good-bye to Sookie forever.

Harris has been with Sookie for more than a decade now. That's a long time to spend with one character. I understand that after a while, an author just wants to do something else, that you just want to work on other projects. For Harris it will mean that she has time to create new characters and do new fun things with existing ones -- such as create video games. Harris has just released Dying for Daylight, an online hidden object game featuring Dahlia Lynley-Chivers, one of her vampire characters.

How are fans of the series reacting to the end of the series?

Kristen at Daemon's Books is already guessing what the end of Sookie's story.

The real question is whom will Sookie end up with? I’ve noticed in Harris’ other series (Lily Bard, Aurora Teagarden, Harper Connelly) that she usually writes a marriage and/or pregnancy into the last book. So will the series end with Sookie getting married?

SookieStackhouse.com has some advice to readers who believe they know the right way for the series to end.

Now, before your start harassing Ms. Harris on her forum about which character Sookie should end up with, be advised that Ms. Harris has known from the get-go how the series was going to end.

At the Sookieverse Harris is being applauded for choosing to end the series while it's still popular.

Harris’ decision to call it a day comes as no surprise to me, as I suspect it doesn’t to anyone who frequents this blog. In fact, I find myself relieved that she’s identified an end point for the series and I look forward to following her into new territory with new characters, and a fresh story.

I have to confess that I haven't read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books. I've been reading about them online for years, since before I even started blogging. Then came the television series True Blood, and I started to feel decidedly behind. The announcement that the series is coming to close to me means it's almost the perfect time to start reading it. Knowing that the last book is on the horizon means that I won't have to wait too long between each book.

How do you feel about the series ending with the thirteenth book? Do you have any predictions about the end of the series?

I always love it when I come across a series near its end. I hate waiting a year or so between books. I'm commenting late, so I can say with certainty that after this latest book, Harris needs to end the series. Her burnout is starting to show, and I can only hope she gets a second wind for these last two.

I think it's a good idea for an author to end a series on their own terms.

I've been reading the books since the beginning, but haven't managed to watch True Blood yet.

Have you tried her other series? You might have to give one of them a try.

Noooooooooooooooooooo! I'm on the 6th or 7th one (taking a break for Neil Gaiman's Good Omens) and love them. I've already purchased all the other ones that are out there. They are my guilty pleasure -- they're just so damn entertaining.

Yeah, you have to wonder where else she can go with it. Will Sookie suddenly develop new powers and become a god among the undead? haha ;(

I dunno, maybe the last couple of books will be better than the last one, because she really is a fantastic writer and I'd love to see the end of the series end on a good note and not a so-so note. :(

I kind of think I like it better when television shows don't follow the same path as the books. They are getting it wrong, yes, but instead on purpose instead of just kind of messing with a little which ends up messing it up totally.

I wonder if she also felt it was kind of meh. It's hard to maintain a series for that long. Maybe that's why she wants to end it.

For both authors and publishers to let go of a successful series. Thirteen books is a lot and it's not like they are particularly short books. I like that she wants to end it while people still like it.

But somewhere along the line I felt like the characters just became unlikable. I could forgive the random passage of time and inconsistencies (could Lucy's age have bounced through time more?) but she made her characters do some horrible things, especially Marino.

Loved the books, HATED the tv show. Couldn't even watch 2 episodes b/c it doesn't follow the books at all!

If you want another great vampire series that is vampire meets very trashy romance the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward is very good.

Haha I love those books, but can totally see your point.

Hey Jen 8 pts

With the exception of her last book in the series Dead in the Family, I really loved the series. The last book was just kinda meh for me.

I've read some of her other books like the Harper Connelly series so I do enjoy her as a writer immensely. Can't wait to see what else she has to offer!

I am really ready. I want some closure on Sookie. In fact, I think the series has gone on a bit too long now.

Vampires were everywhere, weren't they? It's dying down a bit. I have to confess that I got a bit burnt out on fantasy in general, especially YA fantasy. I took a nice long break and I think I might be ready to start dipping my toe back in a little.

I've been told that I bear a slight resemblance to one of the baby vampires though.

I find that sooner or later when the author gets tired of the characters it leaks into the books. Did you ever read Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books? I'm convinced that she now hates every single character.

I've been "over" the series for quite some time. The saturation of all things Vampire really turned me off somewhere in 2010. That said, I'm sure in a few years I will have a Vampire-urge and will finish the series at that time.

Best of luck to the author as she moves on to other things!

I love the books and enjoyed the Harper Connelly books too. Can't stand the TV show though.

No clue how she'll end the series though.

I'm about halfway through the series, having started last September, and honestly, I cannot blame the author. It would make me nuts to write about the same characters for years and years! Best of luck to her in her future endeavors.
