Oh, what a good resolution I made for 2009 to work on better fitness with my family. I sound so sincere. So motivated! So ready! It's hard to believe I wrote that post just a short month ago, because already all of my good intentions deserve a good smack upside the head.
Checking in on my grand plans, what one finds is that... we all came down with a nasty cold, one by one. And so my daily Wii Fit sessions went out the window, while I was sick. And then stayed out the window, as I caught up on work from having been sick. And this week... well, I have no excuse other than inertia. Not exactly laudable progress, I'm aware.
The kids have complained that it's too cold outside for things like riding bikes (we live in Georgia, so rarely is it truly too cold...), and our plans for family walks haven't come to fruition, either.
Basically, our family hasn't made much progress on the exercise front. I shall now hang my head in shame, or perhaps try to convince you that it's not too bad, because we've been doing really well on the healthy eating front. Actually, I'm not going to do either -- instead I'll just point you towards some women who haven't been slacking the way I have, instead.
Wise Bread's Myscha Theriault suggests various "fitness stations" set up in the yard as a frugal and family-friendly way to get everyone exercising.
Linda Kent at Fitness Me In gives instructions on how to get the kids moving by doing a treasure hunt where each search has a prescribed method (skipping, hopping, etc.). I love this!
Totally Her's Melissa Maples is advocating a good old-fashioned night at the bowling alley for familial bonding and a bit of a workout.
Maggie at Nourishing Thoughts reminds us that a simple walk even on a cold winter day is a great way for families to stay fit and connected.
Busy Momma Wellness has various suggestions of family-friendly fitness activities.
And finally -- I had to include this just to remind myself that fitness is about the entire wellness approach, meaning exercise, nutrition, and healthy body image -- Michele Cheplic at the Families.com Fitness Blog tells us that Cindy Crawford's approach to helping her kids stay fit is to... eat ice cream and potato chips in front of them. (She doesn't want them to believe they have to stay super-thin and always deprive themselves of treats.) I have to say, I found that story kind of awesome.
I'm going to try my darndest to get myself and the rest of the family back on that fitness horse, this week. I just need to remind myself that I'm no Cindy Crawford, and I can't just eat chips and call it good....
