Chocolate Chunk Cookie Bars Courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook

My husband bought me a 3 lb. milk chocolate heart for Valentine's Day.  I needed something constructive to do with it besides what we've been doing with it which is cutting off massive chunks and gnawing away.  My go-to cookbook is the e Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook and I found a recipe for chocolate chip cookies...then I noticed the chocolate chip cookie bars.  Oh yeah...cookie bars ROCK.  Instead of using little piddly chocolate chips, I cut some of my chocolate heart into nice big chunks and what came out of my oven was gooey chocolate goodness.  Here's the recipe out of my cookbook:

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 12-oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips (I used 2 cups of milk chocolate chocolate chunks)

1 1/2 cups chopped nuts (I prefer pecans or hazelnuts)

-In a large mixing bowl beat shortening and butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.  Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, and baking soda.  Beat until mixture is combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined.  Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer.  Stir in any remaining flour.  Stir in chocolate and nuts.

-Press dough into an ungreased 15x10x1 in baking pan (I used a 13x9 pan and added five minutes to the baking time.  I got really thick gooey bars but if you want them to be more like a cookie, use the bigger pan).  Bake in a 375 F oven for 15-20 (25 minutes for me) minutes until golden brown.  Cook on wire rack and cut into bars.  Makes 48 bars.

Who doesn't get all warm and fuzzy inside when greeted with chocolate chunk cookie bars?
