Ktreva at The Reality Ranch has some holiday quizzes that you can post on your blog.

The Queen I am Not recalls her favorite holiday memory of her two year old breaking away and dancing to the Christmas Choir – in front of the whole church .

Melinda June in her blog of the same name talks about the excitement of going shopping out of town for the holidays:

Christmas gave us the perfect excuse to get out of town, to explore the world - something you just won't understand if you grew up in a larger metropolitan area. I loved these excursions as much as Christmas itself. They gave me a chance to breathe the "city" air and to imagine a life where I didn't have to buy things at the dingy JC Penney's on Water Street that smelled like musty rubber gripper steps and old linoleum.

Ruvym recalls Hanukkahs past, and one special night during Hanukkah in Israel.

EllynAnne at Apron Memories describes her tradition of inviting non Jewish families to her home for the final night of Hanukkah, and shares memories of those gatherings.

Sherri at Darrenweb describes her childhood memories and writes about how it feels to be celebrating her first married Hanukkah.

My Christmas Meme

1.Real tree or artificial or treeless? Any special traditions with the tree?
Real usually with a fibreoptic one in my bedroom and a small wooden one in the bathroom and one my godmother made in the hallway. My Mom LOVED Christmas, so the sweetest moment is putting her old ornaments on the tree.

2. Eggnog or Cider or Mulled Wine?
I love cider -- cold or sparkling.

3. Spiritual or Secular celebration?
Definitely spiritual.

4. Favorite Christmas music?
Polish Christmas carols -- most from the 1200's called "Kolendy". They are very beautiful and I have special memories of them. Of songs in English I love Hark The Herald Angels Sing and Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.

5. One special holiday memory.
It is a memory that lasted all of an instant. I must have been seven or eight. I was helping Mom with all the holiday baking -- she made tons of baked goods, from Christmas breads to brandied pound cakes (NOT fruit cakes), poppy seed and almond stollen and on and on. There is this one moment that clings to memory. She is wearing a short sleeved white cotton blouse and blue jeans. Her medium length natural jet black hair is falling in her eyes as she bends over to get something out of the oven. Her face has a smear of flour on it , the jeans on her right thigh have flour marks where she had absent-mindedly rubbed her hand when it had flour on it (a habit I still have). She lifted up her head a bit and tried to blow the unruly lock of hair off her eye and nose with a targeted gust of breath from her lower lip. At that moment she caught my eye and she just looked so silly. We both started to laugh and laugh. I felt bathed in her joy, blessed down to my soul by her happiness. The whole memory takes about two seconds to roll out like a piece of old film. But it is as clear as the star over Bethlehem. And almost as bright.

CHRISTMAS MEME

1.Real tree or artificial or treeless? Any special traditions with the tree?
Artificial tree--because when we started adopting children I promised my husband that I would give up real trees--he was so afraid that the house would burn down. Now that we are divorcing...next year a real tree!

2. Eggnog or Cider or Mulled Wine?
Silk Soy Egg Nog...hhmm delicious! And we leave Santa a glass of wine in addition to cookies and soymilk (smile)

3. Spiritual or Secular celebration?
Both. We will go to church on Christmas eve. And party on Christmas day

4. Favorite Christmas music?
Classic Soul and R&B--Temptations, Donnie Hathaway, Whipsers etc and Jazz Christmas music. And lately the Cheetah Girls Holiday CD

5. One special holiday memory.
Last christmas. Khalil was the last to be adopted so last year was the best. He was so beyond excited, you could see he was so at ease and all the anxiety had washed away. He was truly home and he knew it.

And the other memory---each year we go out and hunt for a Black Santa, we just started this tradition. We are up to 4 Black Santas now. We love doing this because when we find one and it is difficult to find them, we know it is a treasure and we treat them as such.

Happy Holidays!
Love,

The Hunt for Black Santa

Long long ago I had a really gorgeous, very small, black santa ornament. It broke into tiny little pieces in one of our moves around the world and I was pretty heartbroken about that. I've never found one I loved so I've never replaced it and sort of gave up on every finding another one for our tree. I should renew my quest for a replacement.

(Also, did you see the blog post about black Santa made by a member earlier in the week? I think it's linked on the right nav in the Race & Ethnicity topic area. Maybe you have some thoughts on her struggles?)

CHRISTMAS MEME

1.Real tree or artificial or treeless? Any special traditions with the tree?

Artificial this year, although we've done real other times. We used to always put it up the day after Thanksgiving, but since my husband went missing I've been less organized about things. We do always take our time decorating it together, pulling out our well-loved mis-matched ornaments that each have a story behind them.

2. Eggnog or Cider or Mulled Wine?

Eggnog for the Children - I have to cut mine heavily with skim milk just to make it drinkable! From our time in Germany I love the smell of Gluehwein but don't actually like to drink it! What about a fourth option - hot chocolate with (if desired) peppermint schnapps or amaretto?

3. Spiritual or Secular celebration?

Secular

4. Favorite Christmas music?

A whole collection of beautiful old carols sung by the Robert Shaw Festival singers.

5. One special holiday memory.

First Christmas in Germany. We went with friends to Fulda, the nearest city, and walked at night through the Weinacht market. There were booths filled with glittering glass ornaments and beautiful wood carvings and the air smelled of roast chestnuts, candied almonds, gluehwein and (oddly) gyros. It was cold and crisp and nothing could have been more like Christmas.

I blogged it too!

I couldn't resist having something to blog about :)

Aw - I lost it somehow but I'm re-writing:

HANNUKAH MEME

1. Describe your Menorah. We have five - you're supposed to have one for each member of the family: one that I bought this year - beautiful blue glass with rainbow colored candle holder pieces; one asymmetrical clay one made by my daughter in preschool, one from my inlaws from when we got married (popular metal one called Tree of Life), one traditional one from my husband's grandmother - very old metal and curlicues all around and one from our synagogue for something i don't remember!

2. Sour Cream or Applesauce with your Latkes? applesauce or naked - cold from the fridge or right from the pan before they make it to the table.

3. Favorite Holiday dish. chocolate gelt

4. Were you with Family this year? yes

5. One special Holiday memory. My synagogue did a Great Latke-Hamantash debate and I was on the hamantash side and we buried the latke - 38-22 votes. If you've never heard of this event, it's great - here's more about it.
