Christmas with Ro

We had a smaller Christmas than usual this year.  I think we shared this circumstance with a great deal of families.  I don't think my kids even noticed.  They had toys, games, family, and cookies.  What more does a kid need for a happy time?  If Mom and Dad didn't get much, well it's not really on their radar.

Ro had asked for some very specific Barbie gifts.  Thankfully in part thanks to one of my favorite bargain sites NoBetterDeal I was able to get many of them.  This is in no way a sponosored post about that site, it's just one of my favorite sites for cheap toys.

Ro watches the new Barbie movies when they come out with avid interest.  This year the new movie was Barbie Princess Charm School.  He giggles and squeals at the finale when he watches it.  Spoilers: the lead Barbie becomes a princess.  He loves it.  When he found out on Christmas morning he also got the lead character doll from Santa, he was squealing with delight.

He's very excited about his upcoming ballet lessons.  He bought himself ballet slippers, found a leotard at a garage sale, and watches ballet videos on youtube.  They have some pretty informative beginner videos that he tries to watch and copy. He really puts effort into it and I'm quite pleased with his self-motivation.

We thought since he was interested in dancing and was a boy, we'd watch Billy Elliott.  Unfortunately, despite being exposed to many many Doctor Who episodes, he couldn't understand it very well through the British accents.  Poor Ro.  My hubby and I enjoyed it though.

Today we're still enjoying the holidays and Ro's wearing a Darth Vader t-shirt, fleece sleep pants, and adorable lime green headband with a giant flower on it.  He also has bright pink painted nails that he painted last night with gift sets from his stocking.  On Christmas morning he wore his new Hello Kitty pajamas and a lime green tutu.  He was totally adorable.

One of the plus sides of having a girly boy is that his sister's hand-me-downs seem awesome to him.  He'll wear almost anything but trends towards either the very girly or very preppy.  If he's not wearing a pink kitty shirt, he's likely to wear a collared polo shirt or button down men's style shirt.  He's not really much for casual boy style.  You'd never catch him in ripped or stained pants or a t-shirt with a football on it.  I find it cute, and I like his sense of style :).  He makes me smile in so many ways.

The present that made him not smile this year?  Well his Gra got him and his sister a set of Monster High dolls.  It was a couples (boy and girl) set.  He was thrilled until he found out he was only getting the boy doll.  He sulked a bit about that, as he really did want the girl doll.  We had a bit of a talk about appreciating gifts, or at least being thankful about them.  I think the problem came, as disappointments often do, from expectation.  Upon seeing the set he thought both dolls were for both of them to share (he and his sister).  For a brief moment in his mind he had both dolls!  Wow!  Then when his grandmother explained things, he only had one, and it wasn't even the one he liked best.  I felt kind of bad for him, but he still shouldn't have been rude about the gift.

He had a wonderful Christmas though.  He got his Barbies, and Disney Princesses, his lego sets and his candy.  He didn't gobble his presents either.  He took the time to appreciate each one, and didn't finish opening his presents until the 26th.  We like to say we open presents at "the speed of kid", which means if they open a game and want to play it, we stop opening gifts and play the game with them.  Or if they want to just play pretend with new dress-up clothes or dolls, we let them.  I strongly believe Christmas morning gifts shouldn't be about a feeding frenzy but rather appreciation and thankfulness.  How can you truly be thankful or appreciative about a gift if you simply say thank you and move on to the next one in five minutes?  I loved how they played with their toys from Santa until two in the afternoon.  We didn't open a single wrapped present until 2:30 :).  It drives our relatives crazy, but

He sounds like a truly fantastic little kid and one who deserves to have a path in life where he can be exactly who he is.
