Cleansing Miso Soup

I’m eating today! I’m proud that I completed a successful 3-day Master Cleanse fast to rest the digestive system.  Day one was great.  I began lagging a bit on day two but that could have been from running errands (including the farmers market, where we got veggies for the magical miso soup!) and shopping early in the day.  On day three I really wanted to eat.

But I didn’t. Instead, I focused inward.  I studied for the class I’m taking on adult learning theory.  I prepared a lecture for the class I’m teaching on nonprofit governance. I got a deep-tissue massage. That felt so good I got a manicure and pedicure.  I drank lots of soothing tea. I body brushed and soaked in the tub.  It was a wonderful weekend of testing my limits and, more importantly, letting my digestive system respond and react to a few days of less work.  If you’re curious about the cleanse you can read my daily journals on my Facebook page.

Back to eating. This is day 10 of the 14-day cleanse. We ease back into eating after fasting for three days.  Fruit salad for breakfast, edamame for a snack (the plan calls for a hard-boiled egg but I don’t eat eggs!), soup for lunch, raw veggie sticks for a snack and a large salad with nuts, seeds and quinoa for dinner.  Other than the fruit salad, all of this has to get packed up for a day of meals-on-the-go as I work all day and teach tonight.

Now, to that soup.  My fabulous nutrition counselor, Jill of Hera Wellness (you can follow her on Facebook) suggests this soup the day before and the day after the Master Cleanse.

Miso Soup Plus
From: The Gut Flush Plan

  • 2t chopped shallots
  • 1t minced fresh ginger
  • 1/4 c cabbage and carrot, thinly sliced
  • 1t olive oi
  • 2 c low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 1t almond butter
  • 2T yellow miso
  • 2T filtered water
  • 3T minced chives

In medium saucepan, saute shallots, ginger, veggies, in oil until crisp-tender about 3 minutes.  Add broth and almond butter and simmer gently for another 3-4 minutes.  Dissolve miso in water and add to saucepan, stirring well.  Heat for another 5 minutes. (do not let boil) 

The kicker? My husband made this delicious soup last night, while we were still fasting.  We got to smell it but couldn’t eat it.  You can bet that I will enjoy every single drop when I have lunch today!
