Cold Nights and Movie Watching
The Rooster and I enjoy watching movies and since the invention of RedBox, we watch them quite often. There haven’t been a ton of great ones lately, but here are the ones we’ve seen in the past couple of weeks and my thoughts on them...
Real Steal – Washed up boxer (played by the hunky Hugh Jackman – which was enough to make me want to watch) turns to giant, boxing robots to make a living and not very well. Enter cute, surprise 11-year-old son who initially hates his Dad but soon, they set out to take down the big, bad Robot and it’s owner. Evangeline Lilly as the girlfriend – nice added bonus for this LOST fan. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one… it’s like Robot Rocky. 7 out of 10

Contagion – Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne – Amazing cast of characters performing a story line we’ve seen several times before. Somebody sneezes, shares a glass and within 2 days, the whole world is dead except for the one guy (Damon) who was immune but had a helluva day in the first 10 minutes. It was enjoyable but made me want to buy an ass load of hand sanitizer and question every time I heard my daughter cough the rest of the night. 6 out of 10
Ides of March – George Clooney and some other people. I actually liked this one a lot and realized that I could probably never be a serious politician. The rather fresh, wet behind the ears campaign manager for presidential hopeful finds out pretty quickly that the job is not always what it seems. Apparently his candidate has some pretty dirty laundry and it’s his job to wash it. Down side to that is the blood on his hands makes for some pretty intensive scrubbing. 8 out of 10
Moneyball – Brad Pitt and Brad Pitt and some other not-as-pretty as Brad Pitt people. Actually what I really would like to know is how Robin Wright got second billing in this movie. I can’t even remember her being IN the movie and isn’t she really only well known for being the Ex-Mrs. Sean Penn?? Jonah Hill was this movie. Whereas Brad’s pretty to look at and a decent enough actor, Jonah knocked this role out of the park and totally deserves his Oscar nomination. So, anyhow.. what happens when you put logic and math behind recruiting players? You win. 9 out of 10
Rise of the Planet of the Apes – A bunch of well-trained Hollywood apes, John Lithgow and other actors who did nothing for me. Y’all, I seriously thought I was going to like this movie. I really got involved with the whole relationship that was being built with Cesar the ape and his adoptive family. But his primate instinct to protect the Lithgow character landed him in Primate Prison and from there it started to go South. When the primates break out of the prison it went from going south to jumping the shark. Worst part? All that happened in the last 20 minutes of the movie. So now I’ve invested 2 hours in a movie, enjoying it for the most part and it went to HELL the last 20 minutes. So much so that I really wanted my 2 hours back. 4 out of 10
Enlighten me… what great movies have you seen lately or what should I avoid at all costs?
