Coldplay, Jennifer Hudson & Lil Wayne Among 2009 Grammy Winners

Big winners at last night's 51st annual Grammy Awards were Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Coldplay, Lil Wayne and Jennifer Hudson.   But before last night's televised portion of the awards even started there was big news about two performers who were scheduled to appear on the show.  R&B singer Chris Brown was arrested after a domestic violence complaint by his girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna.

According to the LA Times:

Brown and Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, were apparently in a car together and got into an argument on North June Street, according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement. Brown stopped the car, the two got out, and the argument escalated, according to police.

A witness called 911, but Brown was gone when officers arrived at the scene. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker, according to police.

Brown was booked at the Wilshire Division station and posted $50,000 bail, sources said. He left the station before 9 p.m.

The Grammy producers couldn't have been happy about the bad publicity overshadowing the award ceremony but the show did go on.

It got off to an exuberant start with U2 performing "Get On Your Boots" from their upcoming album, "No Line On The Horizon."  Even if their songs are sometimes so/so, U2 does know how to light up the stage.  I especially loved the psychedelic big screen montage that ran behind them as they played.

After that it was a big night for the British with the band Coldplay winning Song of the Year for "Viva La Vida" and Best Rock Album for "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," while British songstress Adele won as best new artist.

The oldtimers got to beat up on the youngsters, what with Robert Plant, formerly of Led Zeppelin and country singer Alison Krauss winning five awards for their album "Rising Sands." I guess Alison Krauss isn't really an oldtimer but hangin' with Plant kinda makes her look like one.  Their low key album of country/rockabilly were this year's Grammy sentimental favorites.

Meanwhile Lil Wayne won statuettes for Best Rap Song for "Lollipop," Best Rap Solo Performance for "A Milli," and Best Rap Album for "Tha Carter III."

Here are some other highlights and low lights from the show:

 

Highlights:

  • Jennifer Hudson singing "You Pulled Me Through."  Her return to the Grammy stage after the tragic murders of her Mom, sister and nephew, was the most emotional moment of the night.  She got a much deserved standing ovation.  She also won for Best R&B Album.

  • Al Green, Justin Timberlake, Boyz 2 Men and Keith Urban performing "Let's Stay Together."
  • Whitney Houston looking clean and sober and making sure to show some cheesecake. I wasn't sure she could see very well with those fall eyelashes, but she needs to take 'em off and see her way back to the recording studio. 
  • While presenting Al Green and Duffy took turns singing a few bars.  Andy Williams watched from the audience as Al sang "Moon River" and then Al and Duffy together sang a few bars of "Bridge Over Troubled Water.  Nice moment.  They should make all the presenters do that. 
  • Duffy sportin' a sixties Lulu vibe with the beehive hair and all..."To sir, with loooovvvve!"
  • Seeing actor Morgan Freeman back on his feet after that awful car crash last year.   He introduced the performance of his friend Kenny Chesney
  • Best teeny bopper moment, and no it wasn't the Jonas Brothers.  It was Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus singing together for the very first time, "Fifteen."  Is this song this generation's "At Seventeen"  by Janis Ian?  At least it's not as depressing.
  • Robert Plant's thank you that included this description of the song "Please Read The Letter:"  "Such a spooky song, it's the heart of the the kind of American underworld of rhythm and blues and shimmy."  All righty.
  • The Rap Pack as Queen Latifah introduced them which included, Kanye West, Jay Z, Lil Wayne and M.I.A. singing "Paper Planes/Swagga Like Us."  I'm not big on rap at all but that was a smokin' number.
  • M.I.A. performing in front of millions

Hi Nordette,

Let's hope hip hip crosses a lot of thresholds.  The first one being from misogynistic to respect. 

As for M.I.A., anyone who dares to say that pregnant women aren't capable should take a look at her video from last night...and read some history about women working in the fields.

In fact, as soon as she appeared I commented on Twitter, "YAY!"  ( http://twitter.com/nordette_verite/status/11906140... )I didn't know it was her due date until later, but as she perfromed I kept think she's going to pop.  I never entertain thoughts about physical exertion, visibility, and propriety for pregnant women b/c I remember that black women used to pick cotton, squat and drop kids, and massa didn't care then, why now?  The fact that slave women did it in a system that treated them as animals, does not negate that it's possible to be active up until delivery.  So, if the mom's doctor says she's healthy and not endangering the baby, she can do what she wants to do.

Good point about HipHop crossing a threshold from The Root, and yet I recall that rappers tend to to rant about bitches and hos in one breath praise motherhood or mama in the next. ;-)  The attempt to balance a male ego's desire to be dominant with the realization that males got here via womb seems an ongoing struggle in HipHop.

Here's an interesting reaction to M.I.A.'s high octane performance on stage at the Grammys last night.

The Buzz at The Root ( http://www.theroot.com/buzz/mias-pregnant-moment )did a post about how despite all the rap testosterone on stage M.I.A. had "the biggest balls on stage."

Watching the
Brit-by-way-of Sri Lanka's performance last night, which happened to fall on her due date, we are certain that the hip-hop generation has crossed some sort of threshold.

A commenter on the post left the following fascinating comment:

As one whose first view of appropriate pregnant behavior was learned in the 1940s when women in that conditiondid not attend social events, my initial reaction to M.I.A.'s appearance was that it was weird and grotesque. While she pranced about the stage, understanding overcame atavism and I began to realize that she was making an important
political statement: Biology can no longer be used rationalize the subjection of women to the brutality of male supremacy. Although I never heard of her before, I found out that she is a committed fighter
for universal freedom. My disappointment is that the lyrics to "Swagger Like Us" are far beneath M.I.A.'s intellectual capacity and social vision.

Personally, her being on stage made me uncomfortable at first, but once I saw that she was okay and not seemingly in any danger, I really got into it.  I also think her outfit and the fact that they aired that portion in black and white helped to enhance and camouflage her pregnancy all at the same time.
